"Everybody who has ever read a book will benefit from the way Keith Houston explores the most powerful object of our time. And everybody who has read it will agree that reports of the book's death have been greatly exaggerated." -- Erik Spiekermann, typographerWe may love books, but do we know what lies behind them? In The Book, Keith Houston reveals that the paper, ink, thread, glue, and board from which a book is made tell as rich a story as the words on its pages -- of civilizations, empires, human ingenuity, and madness. In an invitingly tactile history of this 2,000-year-old medium, Houston follows the development of writing, printing, the art of illustrations, and binding to show how we have moved from cuneiform tablets and papyrus scrolls to the hardcovers and paperbacks of today.

Cribbage - Not Just a Game
By Nikodym, Norm
Cribbage can be even more fun if you understand it better. Cribbage is far from a simple game. Great cribbage players and most other cribbage players have adopted playing strategies. Some of those strategies are correct and some are not. If lessons were given by several of the best players, you would find many differences in opinions and strategies. This book re-examines some well-known cribbage ideas and adds some ideas not previously defined. From this book you will understand the better strategies, find helpful ideas, be entertained, play better cribbage, and enjoy cribbage more. This book also introduces the reader to organized cribbage and information about tournaments and clubs.

Forgotten Colorado Silver
By Jr., Robert D. Leonard ; Ken L. Hallenbeck; Adna G. Wilde
At the turn of the last century, miner Joseph Lesher attempted to raise the price of silver by privately minting octagonal "Referendum souvenir medal" coins with values of $1.25 or $1. They were common in Victor, Cripple Creek, Denver and other places in Colorado in the days after William Jennings Bryan fought unsuccessfully for free silver. Surviving an initial dust-up with the Secret Service, Lesher found a loophole to place them in circulation in 1900 and 1901. Today, coin collectors pay more than $1,000 for one. This is the story of Joseph Lesher and his audacious private mint, along with the merchants in the mining towns and elsewhere who supported him.
