Graphic Novels At MPL
The Manchester Public Library has two new book clubs focusing on graphic novels: Getting Graphic, for adults, and Kapow!, for fourth and fifth grade students.
What are graphic novels?
Simply put, graphic novels are book-length comics. Graphic novel is a broad term, and includes fiction, nonfiction, and anthologies. Written for all ages, graphic novels include traditional superhero stories, but also literary adaptations, biographies, and humor.
Getting Graphic
This book club for adults partners with A Hero's Legacy Comics & Collectibles, a Manchester comic book store. Meeting once a month on the third Tuesday of the month at 7pm at Mary Cheney, the group discusses graphic novels ranging from Watchmen to Maus. The group will meet on March 20, 2018 to discuss Persepolis #1 by Marjane Satrapi and a TBD book on April 17, 2018. This program does not require registration. Copies of the book are available for check out in the reference room.

Kapow! Kapow! is a brand new book club for children in fourth and fifth grades. The first meeting is on Thursday March 22, 2018 at 4pm and participants will discuss Amulet Book 1 by Kazu Kibuishi. Copies of the book are available in the children's room and registration is required for this program. 

Book Review: Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage murders and the birth of the FBI
The deception and twists in this true story of Oklahoma's Osage Indians in the 1920's are almost unbelieveable. The Osage Indians have been pushed onto a reservation which was deemed worthless until oil was found beneath it. Now the Osage are some of the wealthiest people in the world, and one by one, they are mysteriously dying, being shot, poisoned, murdered.

The local and state authorities are unable or unwilling to solve these murders, so a federal agent from the Bureau of Investigation, run by a young J. Edgar Hoover, is dispatched to solve the murders. The agent and his hand-picked team of investigators delve into the murders using more modern techniques, as required by Hoover.

Grann, a staff writer for The New Yorker, brings us a riveting story of greed, racism, corruption, and a very dark chapter in our nation's history.

Passport to Connecticut Libraries
From April 2-30, 2018 enter for a a chance to win a Visa gift card of up to $150. Pick up a Passport at the Manchester Public Library. Show your library card and get the Passport stamped. Then, take your passport along as you visit other participating libraries. At each visit you must show your library card, and then the library will stamp your Passport and give you a token gift. Visit at least five participating libraries and return your passport to a participating library by May 7th. You will be entered into one statewide drawing for a chance to win a $150 Visa gift card for adults (18 and up) and a $100 Visa gift card for children (under 18).

Model Car Club For Children

Keep an eye out for our latest new program- Muscle Car Model Club. All models are geared toward the novice model builder for children ages 8 to 11 years. Four model building sessions are planned for April, May, June, and July of 2018. Registration for the first model building event, a classic 1960's Corvette, will begin in early April. Special thanks to Cruisin' on Main Street Committee for funding this awesome opportunity.

Life On Parole

With unique access, go inside an effort in Connecticut to change the way parole works and reduce the number of people returning to prison. Presented by the Institute for Municipal and Regional Policy at Central Connecticut State University, this 55-minute film follows four former prisoners as they navigate the challenges of their first year on parole. Following the documentary, engage in conversation with former parolees and current criminal justice professionals. Monday, April 2, 2018 at 6:30pm at Whiton Branch Library.
