Don’t have time to read?  Try listening to your books!
Although I enjoy reading, having my books read to me is my guilty pleasure.  A good narrator can change a story, and make characters come to life.  On the flip side, a weak narrator can really ruin a good book.  Here are some of the best audiobooks that I’ve listed to in 2017.
The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh
This young adult tale loosely based on the Arabian folktale of Scheherazade is not the sort of story that I would normally read or listen to but I’m glad I picked it up.  One review I read compared it to Game of Thrones meets Arabian Nights.  The narration was beautiful and the book well-written, with lavish descriptions of settings, fabrics, and foods that absorbed me into each scene.  I enjoyed all of the rich language and details and I am excited to listen to the second book in this duology.
Mrs. Fletcher by Tom Perrotta
This is my fourth book by Perrotta and favorite so far.  His characters always feel so real, like they might even be people that I know. Their situations are always complex yet very normal and often explore both sides of relationships which I enjoy.  In this story, Eve Fletcher is divorced and sending her only child off to college.  While adjusting to her new life she enrolls in a community college course where she meets people and begins new relationships.  This book also dealt a lot with women's studies and the societal pressures to fit a certain mold. The narration was enjoyable and features a full cast which has always been one of my favorite ways to listen to a book.

*February 3, 2018 10:30am: Take Your Child To the Library Day. Special program: Books and Beast. All ages. No registration required. (Cheney)
*February 24, 2018 10:30am: Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Birthday celebration cosponsored by Pi Beta Phi Manchester Area Alumnae Club. Enjoy birthday cake, games, stories, and silly activities. All ages. No registration required. (Cheney)

New Book Club: Recipe Readers
If you love to cook, we have the book club for you! The Manchester Public Library’s newest book club is Recipe Readers. In this book club, participants choose a recipe from the month’s cook book or theme selection, register themselves and their recipe by calling the reference desk, and make enough to share with fellow attendees for the event.
The program is run by librarian Michelle, who is studying culinary arts at Manchester Community College.
February’s cook book selections are Smitten Kitchen Everyday, The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, and www.smittenkitchen.com by Deb Perelman. Copies of the cookbooks are available for check out at Mary Cheney. The program is Saturday February 3, 2018 from 1-3pm in the Howroyd Program Room.

Whiton Saturdays

Whiton Branch Library will be open Saturdays from January 6th through March 31, 2018, 9am to 5pm. As a reminder, if you are having difficulty parking at Mary Cheney, there is plenty of parking at Whiton.

Drop-In Crafts

A rock painting program is scheduled Saturday January 27, 2018 from 2-4pm and a Valentine’s Card making program on Saturday February 10, 2018 from 2-4pm. Both programs are open to all ages and drop-in; no registration required. All materials will be provided for these free programs.
