One Book, One Town Event

The Manchester Public Library and the One Book, One Town Committee are pleased to announce our 2022 One Book, One Town selection and events. The Manchester community and surrouding areas are invited to read "The Other Black Girl" by Hamden native Zakiya Dalila Harris. "The Other Black Girl" has been a New York Times bestseller, and is currently in development for a hulu television show.

Harris will be speaking at Manchester Community College on Thursday, September 29th, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. This is a free event; no tickets or registration is required. Copies of her book will be available for purcahse and signing from our partner, Book Club on the Go. Library copies are available for check out at both library buildings to read before the event. Refreshments for the 9/29/2022 event will be provided by Brown Butter Creations and GRDN KTCHN.

Update: Current Status of the Work on a 21st Century Public Library

On August 2, 2022, the Board of Directors unanimously approved sending to the voters in November a bond referendum question asking if the town can issue up to $39 million worth of bonds in order to build a new main library building at 1041 Main Street. New: The Wanderlust Book Club

It's time to travel - through books! Introducing the Wanderlust Book Club, a new book group that will travel vicariously through reading. In this book club, selections will be atmospheric books that transport you to locations around the world...and perhaps beyond. Titles will be primarily fiction, with an occasional non-fiction or memoir selection, and meetings will be held once a month on Thursday evenings. Our first book, set in Barcelona, Spain, is "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, with the opening meeting on Thursday, November 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the Howroyd Room at Mary Cheney.

Copies of each month's book will be available at both library buildings. This is a free book discussion program and no registration is required. For more information, contact Valerie at 860-643-2471 or the Reference Desk at 860-645-0821.

Hispanic Heritage Month Activities

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed every year from September 15 through October 15 as a way of celebrating the works, accomplishments, history, and culture of American citizens whose ancestors came from Mexico, Central and South America, Spain, and the Caribbean. This year, MPL has a variety of programs during Hispanic Heritage Month, including a Frida Kahlo planter craft for adults, a performance by a Mexican dance company from NYC for all ages, and a folkloric music and dancing performance for children. In addition, our "Check 'Em Out" and "Not So YA" Book Clubs will be reading books in September and October by Hispanic authors. For more information on these programs, please see our September and October calendars for children and adults.
