Starling Wearable Word Counter
The Manchester Public Library is now loaning to parents the Starling wearable word counter - the ultimate parenting companion! The Starling helps parents set and meet goals for verbal engagement, by counting the number of words heard by infants and delivering daily tips and encouragement. The Starling was inspired by three decades of research showing the importance of verbal engagement on a child's language development. The take-away: it's never too early to start talking to your baby. Borrow a Starling word counter from the parenting section in the Mary Cheney library building's Children's room.
Children's Services has many great family programs in December for all ages. All library programs are free; please check the Children's calendar online or the print version available in the library for additional details.
New Year Book Resolution Winter Reading Challenge
Join us in our "New Year Book Resolution Winter Reading Challenge", which runs January 2 through February 28, 2019. To participate, pick up a bookmark checklist at the library, with goals related to reading, library programs and library offerings.
We will have a cozy kick-off party on January 8th at 7 p.m., complete with hot cocoa, tea, snacks, fun activities and more. At the end of the reading challenge, turn in the bookmark checklist to the library to be entered into a drawing to win tickets to Jorgensen Center or other special prizes. There will be lots of seasonally themed programs as well, on topics such as healthy eating, decluttering, paint your own winter scene on a canvas, and more. Stay tuned for more details!

Meet Michelle M., New Teen Librarian!
Michelle M. happily joins the Manchester Public Library, taking on the role of Teen Librarian. She will continue running some of the popular teen programs already in place, as well as adding new options into the mix. One new program middle school and high school students can look forward to is "Make It, Take It", held on Tuesdays from 3-4:30 p.m. at Mary Cheney and during which teens can create something to take home. Here are the December "Make It, Take It" themes.
December 4th: Mug Sharpies. Use Sharpies to decorate mugs. Sharpies and mugs provided - you make the design!
December 11th: Hot Chocolate in a Jar. Nothing beats hot chocolate on a cold night! Come create a unique hot chocolate mix to keep or give as a gift.
December 18th: Gingerbread Houses. We will have all the fixings to create an awesome gingerbread house.
Teens can start the New Year off right with a six-week Teen Yoga Class beginning in February. Stay tuned for more information on this and other upcoming teen programs.
Michelle M. is always happy to recommend a great read and take suggestions on programs and books for teens. Feel free to send her an e-mail at mmiranda@manchesterct.gov.
