Book Review: One Good Mama Bone by Bren McClain

Starvation is a strong motivator. In the case of Sara Creamer and her stepson, Emerson Bridge, starvation will come sooner rather than later if a solution doesn’t show itself soon. Taking place in the 1950’s, in rural South Carolina, Sara has recently been widowed by a husband who drank himself “half to death”. Six year old Emerson Bridge is keenly aware of the situation and at a loss as to what to do. When Sara reads in the newspaper that $700 could be won raising a Grand Champion Steer, she and Emerson acquire a sickly calf and together begin the arduous journey of raising a calf to a full grown steer. One Good Mama Bone by Bren McClain is southern literature at its finest. This mother and child lead the reader through the perils of class, violence and religion, coming through on the other side with examples of the most profound parental love, loyalty and acceptance. This is by far the best book I have read in 2017 and cannot recommend it more strongly. —-Lynn Jacobs

       Author Talk: Hanna Perlstein Marcus

On Monday, September 25, 2017 Hanna Perlstein Marcus will be discussing the sequel to her award-winning memoir, Sidonia’s Thread. Set in the deteriorating north end of Springfield, Massachusetts in the 1950s and early ’60s, Surviving Remnant describes Marcus’ experiences growing up with her mother in an enclave of Holocaust survivors. A story no one knows...until now. Surviving Remnant is an authentic look at a poignant immigrant saga from deep inside.

Marcus was born at the Bergen Belsen displaced persons camp after World War II and later immigrated to Springfield, Massachusetts with her mother. She is a UMass and UConn graduate and a licensed clinical social worker in Connecticut. Her first book, Sidonia’s Thread was the winner of the 2014 Best Kindle Book Award for nonfiction and was nominated for the Sophie Brody Medal and the Sarton Memoir Prize. The program will take place at 6:30pm at Whiton. Books will be available for sale and signing. No registration is required for this free program.
