Coming to MPL in late November: Thousands of downloadable audiobooks, ebooks, music, and more!

Looking for a new way to access the library’s digital collection in addition to using Overdrive? You’re in luck! Introducing hoopla, the newest service that the library provides that allows you to download audiobooks and ebooks and allows you to stream music, movies, and TV shows. Similar to Overdrive, to use hoopla you will need to download the hoopla app to your mobile device and create an account using your valid Manchester Public Library card and your email address. You can also access hoopla using a PC/Mac. There are three stand-out collections housed on hoopla including tens of thousands of audiobooks, music, and graphic novels. If a title is available from the hoopla service, multiple people can download it simultaneously. There is no need to “reserve” or “place a hold” on the item. You also have the option to download and stream full music albums, including many of the newest releases for 7 days. There is also a large collection of GRAPHIC NOVELS available for download. Although hoopla has hundreds of thousands of ebooks and audiobooks to choose from, if you are looking for current best sellers Overdrive is your best choice. To get started click on the “Online Databases” link found on our website. For more information call 860-645-0821.

Homebound Services

Homebound Service, also sometimes referred to as bookmobile, is a free delivery service for Manchester residents who are not easily served by our two library buildings. Our MPL bookmobile staff visits patrons who are temporarily or permanently homebound due to illness or physical disability and are unable to access the library. Themed book kits can also be delivered to daycare providers who are unable to visit the library buildings. An assigned staff member delivers materials to the resident’s home once a month on the same day of the week. If you’d like to sign up or hear more about this service, please contact the circulation desk of the main library building at 860-643-2471 or email us at bookmobile@manchesterct.gov.

Ugly Sweater Contest: Who can make the ugliest sweater?

You provide the sweater; we’ll provide the ugly.

Join us on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 7pm at Cheney for an Ugly Sweater Party! Please bring your own sweater, and we will provide all of the materials to decorate your sweater. Once everyone is done uglying up their sweaters, two of our librarians will judge who has the ugliest creation. The winner will win the bragging rights to having created the ugliest sweater of the night. This is the perfect opportunity to create something that you can wear to all of your ugly sweater parties. Cookies and hot chocolate will be provided. This program is for adults and no registration is required. For more information call 860-645-0821.

Author Visit: Geoffrey Craig

On Monday, November 28, 2016 at 7pm the Manchester Public Library will be hosting Connecticut author, Geoffrey Craig. Craig's novel "Scudder's Gorge" shines a harsh light on what man is capable of doing to his fellow man, beginning with the day of the “bomb” in Hiroshima and then moving backwards in time to Eighteenth Century Vermont as a crime reverberates down the generations. Craig has an MBA from Harvard and an MA in history from Santa Clara University. He served in the Peace Corps in Peru and had a long career in banking before turning to writing. Craig’s fiction, poetry and drama have appeared in numerous literary journals. He has received two Pushcart Prize nominations. Four of his full-length plays (one co-authored) and nine of his one-acts have been produced. "Scudder’s Gorge" is his first prose novel. Books will be available for sale and signing. The program will take place in the Howroyd Room at Cheney. Registration is not required for this free program. For more information please call Reference and Adult Services at 860-645-0821 or visit our website.
