All physical services at the library are currently suspended

The rapidly changing situation with the coronavirus means that the library has closed the building completely and suspended all physical services. Here is the information you need now:

  • All physical services at the library are temporarily suspended, including drive-thru service
  • Library staff will be available 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and
9 a.m.-noon Saturday to answer phone calls and email messages to assist patrons with their accounts and to offer technical assistance
  • Due dates on all items checked out will be delayed until the library is open, so there is no need to return items while the library is closed
  • All library digital services remain available while the library is closed (see below for more detailed information about Hoopla, RB Digital, Libby and Sunflower eLibrary)
  • Online live streaming of yoga, kids’ yoga and story times will continue (be sure to catch it on our Facebook page) — details about some live-streamed events are lower in the newsletter
  • Library staff will update the public regularly through the library website
at www.derbylibrary.com and Facebook, Instagram (@derby_library) and Twitter (@derby_library)
  • Patrons may contact the library by phone at 316-788-0760 or by email at publicsupport@derbylibrary.com

In addition to the scheduled live stream events, watch our Facebook page for other interactive opportunities with the library.

If you have a teen who is interested in volunteering for summer reading at the library, please be sure to complete the online application on the website here: https://derbylibrary.com/kids-and-teens/teen-volunteers . If you picked up a paper application to be a teen volunteer, it may be returned in the book drop while the library is closed. Did you miss your chance to see art by DHS students and faculty?

Even though the art is down and the library is locked, you can still see all the amazing art created by students. Our wonderful Miss Alyssa, teen librarian, created a video that will walk you through the show so you can take some time and take a virtual walk through the exhibition.

View the video on the library YouTube

A Little Bite for You
by Mack

Summary: A helpful little chick feeds a bunch of different animals, that’s all there is to it, and it is adorable!

My Thoughts: Amelia definitely enjoyed this one a lot, because she loves to feed our dog her food basically every time she eats. (They have bonded over this, and are besties). It’s the perfect size for her, and the pages are very sturdy and not easily torn! That’s a big plus for her age!

The Other Mrs.
by Mary Kubica

First line: There’s something off about the house.

Summary: When Will’s sister dies, he is left in charge of her estate and teenage daughter. Sadie and Will move from bustling Chicago to a small island town in Maine. Several weeks after moving in their next door neighbor is murdered. This rocks the small town. As Sadie is drawn into the murder investigation her life begins to unravel and secrets from the past may have followed them to this idyllic island.

My thoughts: This is my first interaction with Mary Kubica’s writing. I enjoyed the story, the writing and the characters. However, very early on I guessed one of the major plot twists. It seemed rather obvious but maybe I have read too many thrillers? But even when it is revealed I was shocked by other revelations that tied in with it. I found the pacing quick and the story to be engaging. I am looking forward to trying a few other books by Kubica in the future.

I really enjoyed and wished we could have had more interactions with Imogen, Will’s niece. Scenes with her were my favorites. I wanted to know more about her. I loved the scene in the graveyard. She was a complex character that always caused a little friction.

Chain of Gold
by Cassandra Clare

First line: Lucie Herondale was ten years old when she first met the boy in the forest.

Summary: In Cassandra Clare’s newest addition to the Shadowhunter world we are introduced to the children of Will and Tessa Herondale. Ever since the end of the Clockwork War life has been quiet. The young Shadowhunters have spent their time like all other Victorians. Until a new form of demon enters their world and rocks it to its core. How do they fight something they do not understand?  James, Lucie and their friends are on the front lines looking for a cure to the mysterious demon poison killing their fellow Shadowhunters.

My thoughts: I LOVE everything Cassandra Clare writes! I am always the first person on the hold list for a new Shadowhunter book. This one did not disappoint. I love the cover. I love the time period. I love the characters. If you need some fantasy to steal you away from your current worries than I highly recommend this. It is full of wit, action and a little romance. Chain of Gold is very entertaining! I would describe it as Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations with demons! But I recommend reading the Infernal Devices series first since this is a follow up to those events.
