New release book review:
Loki: Where Mischief Lies
by Mackenzi Lee

First line: The Royal Feast of Gullveig, like all Asgardian feast days, was enjoyable for those who were fond of listening to overly long speeches, exchanging inane niceties, and getting their feet stepped on, because the Great Hall was always too crowded and no one knew how to walk in heels.

Summary: When young Loki, Prince of Asgard, meets the enchantress in training, Amora, he feels that he has found someone that truly understands him. She does not see him as evil or conniving. But when they sneak into the treasury and destroy an Asgardian relic, Amora is banished to Midgard (Earth) for her actions.

Years later on a diplomatic mission Loki and Thor start an interdimensional incident. As punishment Loki is sent to Midgard to help a secret human society find the source of the mysterious deaths that are shaking London. As he begins his hunt with the SHARP society he finds that he may know more about what is happening than originally thought.

My thoughts: I LOVE Loki. Or maybe I love Tom Hiddleston? Oh well. This was fun! I liked the story of a young Thor and Loki. It was great to see Loki trying to figure out who he is. Even though the plot line was a little predictable it was still a good book. I think giving these comic/movie characters backstories is a great idea. It makes reading more interesting for teens and young adults. They have a way to continue the stories they love in another form. Plus the cover is stunning.

Book review:
Carrie by Stephen King

First line: News itemfrom the Westover (Me.) weekly Enterprise, August 19, 1966:

RAIN OF STONES REPORTED
It was reliably reported by several persons that a rain of stones fell from a clear blue sky on Carlin Street in the town of Chamberlain on August 17th.

Summary: In Stephen King’s first novel he introduces the world to Carrie. A high school girl who is an outcast in her town.  Without a father and with a mother who is very religious, Carrie is mercilessly bullied by the students of the local high school. However, a few days before the prom she is asked by a popular boy named Tommy to accompany him to the dance. She accepts even though she knows that her mother will try to stop her. It appears to be the perfect night until a “prank” turns deadly.

My thoughts: I went into this knowing the basic story of Carrie but having never seen the movies I was still in for some surprises.  King does a fantastic job of weaving the narrative into a book that keeps the reader wanting more.  It took a little while to get used to the style which is a mixture of articles, interviews, Carrie’s thoughts and the events of the week.  He foreshadows or outright tells the reader what to expect but it makes it no easier to read when the events actually happen.

New-release book review:
Lady in the Lake
by Laura Lippman

First line: I saw you once.

Summary: It's 1966 in Baltimore.  Madeleine Schwartz is the typical Jewish housewife until the day that she decides she no longer wants to be. So she makes the announcement that she is leaving her husband and going to make a name for herself. When Cleo Sherwood, a young African-American woman, is reported missing Maddie decides that she is going to find out as much as she can about her life and what happened to this woman who no one seems to care about.

My thoughts: This is my first time reading Laura Lippman but it will not be the last. I loved the formatting of the story. It was one of the main reasons I picked it up. Every other chapter is told from Maddie’s perspective and then the following chapter is from the point of view of a minor character from the chapter before like a waitress or newspaper reporter. It was a lot of fun and had a great twist at the end. I am looking forward to trying a few more of her books in the near future.
