Please join us at one of the following times as we explore this story written as a "love letter" to her grandmother.

Peter Fletcher, classical guitarist

Join us at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 20, for a free performance by Peter Fletcher, a classical guitarist based in Detroit and New York City. He performs more than 100 concerts a year, and his recordings are critically acclaimed. His audience-friendly repertoire includes selections that range from the Renaissance through the 20th century, including works by J. S. Bach, Paganini, and British composer William Walton. Fletcher played Carnegie Hall earlier this year to great enthusiasm and we are lucky to have him come to Derby for a performance. Don't miss this exciting opportunity!

"Cowboys and Clerics" presented by the Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Derby Public Library are pleased to welcome John Burchill to the library as he talks about the early days of Kansas clery and the colorful characters that made up the state's early faith communities. These were the days when Wild Bill Hickok might ride his horse into your church service — it happened in Junction City — and the life of a minister was a rowdy affair.

  • Program is at 10 a.m. Saturday,
Oct. 21,  in the Community Room

Burchill is an author and criminal justice historian who teaches at Kansas Wesleyan University. This program is brought to you by the Kansas Humanities Council.

New release book review:
Uncommon Type by Tom Hanks

First line: Anna said there was only one place to find a meaningful gift for MDash—the Antique Warehouse, not so much a place for old treasures as a permanent swap meet in what used to be the Lux Theater.

Summary: A collection of short stories written by the actor. Each story has its own feel and flow to it, but each story includes a typewriter. Stories include subjects such as time travel, a struggling actress, and a bowler with a perfect score.

My thoughts: I am a fan of Tom Hanks, so this was a must read for me! The stories are unique and enjoyable. I am not used to reading short stories but it was nice because I could read a 30-minute story and feel satisfied. My favorite was the story of the time-traveling billionaire. Tom Hanks is a great talent, and he has once again proven it with this collection.

New release book review: Everything is Awful by Matt Bellassai

First line: I was six years old when I last peed my pants.

Summary: Matt Bellassai is an internet star. He has a weekly show where he gets drunk and tells you how to live your life. He started his career at BuzzFeed and won a People's Choice Award for his online videos. In this book he writes about the real and embarassing times in his life, from childhood, to coming out, to living in New York City.

My thoughts: I recently discovered Matt and his Facebook videos. I laugh so hard that I start to tear up. This books is filled with fun stories from his life that made me chuckle and blush along with him. Watch one of his videos so you hear his voice while you read. Fabulous!

New release book review:

Unqualified by Anna Faris

First line: I'm not qualified to write a book.

Summary: Anna Faris, actress and host of a podcast, has written her first book. She details her life, career, and offers advice for her podcast listeners. Written in an informal style, she writes as if she is talking to the reader. Her wit and sense of humor come through in her writing.

My thoughts: I have been a fan of Anna Faris for years. I have seen most of her movies, and always make time to watch her TV show, Mom. She is funny and heartfelt. This book was a little hard to read after the recent announcement of her separation from her husband, Chris Pratt. But, she is truthful about the struggles of life in Hollywood and being in the public view. I like her even more after reading this book.
