Now in its third year, Coronado Island Film Festival again invites filmmakers everywhere, from aspiring student to seasoned pro, to join us in the seaside village of Coronado, California (a bridge ride away from San Diego) for a destination festival weekend unlike any other.
Coronado’s enduring love affair with Hollywood began back in the earliest days of filmmaking, when “movie people” were irresistibly drawn to the still-legendary hospitality of the iconic Hotel del Coronado (the Festival’s Presenting Sponsor), built right on the sand in 1888. Coronado’s world-class beaches, perfect weather, and proximity to Hollywood have made it a favorite go-to spot for the stars since those halcyon days when Errol Flynn, Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin strolled the Avenue. That same avenue, with its unique shops, blooming gardens and alfresco dining, has been named one of America’s five “Most Romantic Main Streets” by the National Trust for Historic Places.

Workshop: Difficult Conversations: The Art and Science of Living Together
-(SIGN UP REQUIRED) It will be held on Saturday, November 3rd beginning at 1:30pm. Facilitated by Kern Beare, founder of Pop the Bubble, a non-profit initiative to help heal our national and global divide. If you would like to attend, please send an email to ehauser@coronado.lib.ca.us so we know how many participants we will have. The workshop is free and open to the public—we just need you to sign up ahead of time.

Author Event: American Presidents, North Korean Dictators, and the Elephants in the Room A Fictional Look at a Real Problem with Author Doug Norton
In partnership with Bay Books, the Coronado Library will host Doug Norton on Thursday, November 1st at 6:30 pm for a presentation entitled, “American Presidents, North Korean Dictators, and the Elephants in the Room,” relating the fictional plots of his Code Word thrillers to current developments in East Asia.

Concert: Music from the Movies: A Four-Hand Piano Performance on Tuesday, November 5th at 1pm
In anticipation of the Coronado Island Film Fest,the library will host Elegancia Doble as they play music from films from the 1940s to the 2000s. Naomi Hobbs, is an award winning pianist, arranger and composer who earned her degree in piano performance in Tokyo, Japan. She won first place in the International Piano Competition in Mexico in 2012. She was also a gold medalist award winner in the Seattle International Piano Competition in 2015. Yumiko Oya received her Master's Degree in Piano Performance from the California Institute of the Arts. She has performed with orchestras, chamber ensembles, and as a soloist. She is a dedicated piano instructor who teaches students of all ages. As a piano duo, Elegancia Doble, won first place in the Japan Musician’s Association Piano Competition 2016 in Los Angeles, California.

Drowned Hopes by Donald E. Westlake
Westlake here brings back decent, smart and unlucky John Dortmunder for a seventh adventure. After a typically unrewarding night of attempted burglary, Dortmunder comes home to find ex-cellmate Tom Jimson ensconced in the living room. Jimson, given a 70th-birthday release from an overcrowded state prison, is as calmly venal and vicious as ever as he asks Dortmunder's help in reclaiming a $700,000 stash from an old robbery. The loot was buried in an upstate New York town that was subsequently flooded to become part of New York City's reservoir system. Jimson's plan to blow up the reservoir dam will doom nearby towns, so Dortmunder must concoct a more humane solution. A motley cast turning through a dizzying variety of plot twists will keep readers laughing. Most risible is the perfectly sensible bewilderment of Westlake's Runyonesque New Yorkers at life upstate: ``If we stay here much longer, we'll start buying one another birthday cards.''
