Annapurna by Maurice Herzog
In 1950, no mountain higher than 8,000 meters had ever been climbed. Maurice Herzog and other members of the French Alpine Club had resolved to try. Their goal was a 26,493-foot Himalayan peak called Annapurna. But unlike other climbs, which draw on the experience of prior reconnaissance, the routes up Annapurna had never been analyzed before. Herzog and his team had to locate the mountain using sketchy, crude maps, pick out a single, untried route, and go for the summit. Annapurna is the unforgettable account of this dramatic and heroic climb, and of its harrowing aftermath. Although Herzog and his comrade Louis Lachenal reached the mountain's summit, their descent was a nightmare of frostbite, snow blindness, and near death. With grit and courage manifest on every page, Herzog's narrative is one of the great mountain-adventure stories of all time.

Coronado Community Big Band w/Nado Gelato for Guests
Enjoy the great Coronado Big Band as they play favorite numbers in an outdoor concert with a cup of gelato from Nado Gelato. For over twenty years, Coronado Big Band has entertained the community with its 17-piece jazz orchestra including a full brass section of saxophones, trumpets and trombones, as well as bass, drums and piano. Led by Bob Worthington, this accomplished swing band has been featured at Dizzy’s Jazz Club in downtown San Diego, and Balboa Park’s summer Twilight Concert Series. and traditionally plays the opening concert for the Coronado Library’s Summer Festival.

Return to the Moon: 50 Years from “One Small Step” (LECTURE)
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s “one small step” on the surface of our celestial neighbor, the Moon. How did we accomplish one of mankind’s greatest achievements in under a decade, and what did we learn from the Apollo program? With digitally restored footage and hands-on demonstrations, Philip Blanco, Ph.D. will take us back to the Moon and discuss current and future plans (?) to return, this time not just to leave flags and footprints, but perhaps, to stay.Dr. Blanco’s interest in space and astronomy was inspired by his earliest memories of the Apollo landings, and his father’s explosive backyard chemistry experiments. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, he continued his research on active galaxies at UCSD, and worked under contract to NASA on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite. He is currently a professor in the astronomy department of Grossmont College, and volunteers with colleagues at SDSU to develop the latest technologies for astronomy education.
