Saturday Book Club
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade?s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi?s transformation from a naive medical student "possessed," as he wrote, "by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life,"  into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality. What makes life worth living in the face of death?

Mystery Book Club
The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle

As a dense yellow fog swirls through the streets of London, a deep melancholy has descended on Sherlock Holmes, who sits in a cocaine-induced haze at 221B Baker Street. His mood is only lifted by a visit from a beautiful but distressed young woman - Mary Morstan, whose father vanished ten years before. Four years later she began to receive an exquisite gift every year: a large, lustrous pearl. Now she has had an intriguing invitation to meet her unknown benefactor and urges Holmes and Watson to accompany her. And in the ensuing investigation - which involves a wronged woman, a stolen hoard of Indian treasure, a wooden-legged ruffian, a helpful dog and a love affair - even the jaded Holmes is moved to exclaim, 'Isn't it gorgeous!'

POV: Bill Nye Science Guy

Bill Nye is a man on a mission: to stop the spread of anti-scientific thinking across the world. The former star of the popular kid's show "Bill Nye The Science Guy" is now advocating for the importance of science, research and discovery in public life. With intimate and exclusive access —as well as plenty of wonder and whimsy — this behind-the-scenes portrait of Nye follows him as he takes off his Science Guy lab coat and takes on those who deny climate change, evolution, and a science-based worldview. The film features Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ann Druyan and many others.

Happy Birthday, Thomas Jefferson!

Thomas Jefferson enjoyed the art of dance—so we celebrate the anniversary of his birth in 1743 with a performance of the dances he loved.  The event will feature San Diego’s English Country Dancers who will perform numbers from the 1700s and share the history of these traditions.  Audience members will be invited to learn the steps to “Jefferson and Liberty,” a contra-style dance.  Birthday cake will be served after the performance.

This event is made possible by the Ross Marital Trust.  Doors to the Winn Room will open at 3:15 pm.

 Great Castles of England

Enjoy a “virtual travelogue” of several castles throughout England (both famous, and lesser known) that spans the history of medieval castle building, and gives an understanding of the architecture, military significance, and cultural value of castles from the 9th century to the 15th century. We’ll view lots of great photos and illustrations as we consider the hows and whys of castle design and construction and life inside a medieval castle.
Presented by Anglophile, Scott Farrell, founder, and director of Chivalry Today.  With over 30 years of experience in the fields of arms, armor, and medieval military history, he has been involved with independent study programs at the Royal Armories at Leeds, and with Cadw (the department of the Welsh government in charge of preserving castles and other historical monuments).
This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  Doors to the Winn Room will open at 10:15 am.

Open Mic Poetry Night

Back by popular demand, in partnership with the Coronado Scribes Writing Group, the Coronado Library will host another public coffeehouse-style poetry open mic night. Former Mayor Casey Tanaka will emcee the event, and anyone interested in reading their own poetry is invited to share their work.  If you‘d like to read at this event, send an email to rsvp@coronado.lib.ca.us and you will be added to the schedule.

In addition to the poets who will be reading, the evening is open to anyone who enjoys listening to poetry or would just like to meet some local writers.  Refreshments will be served and local pianist Mark Danislovszky will perform—he may even play his accordion!  The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Coronado Library.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.  Doors to the Winn Room will open at 5:45 pm.

Author Talk
Author Lisa K. Shapiro will discuss her new book:
No Forgotten Fronts:  An American War Story in Letters.

At the beginning of World War II, a professor from San Diego State College asked students entering military service to write to him.  For the next five years, thousands of letters from places like Pearl Harbor, North Africa, and Normandy began with the salutation, "Dear Doc," and described vivid accounts of training, combat, and camaraderie.

Students and their families penned more than 4,500 letters to Dr. Post.  Pilots wrote about seeing planes shot down. Men in POW camps sent word about the location of other prisoners, and Dr. Post passed information on to frantic families.  Mothers, hoping for news about missing sons, clutched at the details.  WACS and WAVES hinted about bomb tests and surveillance.  Friends labored over eulogies for their classmates.  These intimate, first-person accounts captured honesty, sympathy, raw grief, and wonder.

Every month, Dr. Post mailed hundreds of newsletters to his Fighting Aztecs around the globe.  He never lost track of his students, even on the "forgotten fronts." He assured them that everyone at home was praying for their safe return.

No Forgotten Fronts: From Classrooms to Combat is the universal story of struggle and sacrifice in the fight for democracy and the preservation of American values.

Doors to the Winn Room will open at 6:15 pm.  Books will be available to purchase from Bay Books.  A Signing Reception will follow the author’s talk.
