March is a perfect time to reconnect...

Cold weather may be keeping you inside making it hard to keep those New Year's resolutions we made not that long ago.  While the snow and cold might keep you from logging those extra steps outside it can be a perfect time to check out some of the new cookbooks here at the Amherst Public Library.

Books like The Vitamix Cookbook:250 Delicious Whole Food Recipes, or Rocco DeSpirito's The Negative Calorie Diet might be just the inspiration you're looking for to add some healthy choices to your family table.

Comfort foods to please any pallet can be found in The Classic Slow Cooker: Best Loved Family Recipes and Sweets & Treats with Six Sisters' Stuff is a fun book of not only tons of recipes for cheesecakes, brownies and desserts but fun traditions and gift ideas that will earn you some mega hostess points.

Famous names and Villainous Vixens

Dan Ruminski, Cleveland author and storyteller, will present Infamous and Famous Women of Cleveland's Millionaire's Row on Thursday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Mark Twain called Cleveland's Euclid Avenue the grandest street in the world.  During the late 1800s and early 1900s Cleveland was the center of wealth with names like Rockefeller, Mather and Hanna.  Consider this the Real Housewives of Cleveland's Gilded Age
as Ruminski recounts stories of swindlers and trysts that would make most Downton Abbey characters blush.

A book sale and signing will follow the program.

Check our calendar for full details of this and other events:

Join together with Crochet

Our crochet group at the library is starting a new series of workshops on February 27 and continuing in March where Vivian will focus is on making granny squares.

We need everyone's help in crocheting squares we will then join together to make small afghans to be donated to a local charity as part of Warm Up America.

Find out more details during the workshop.  Even beginners will be able to participate.  Don't worry if your square looks more like Wisconsin or Utah, we will make it work, plus it's great practice and a good way to use up yarn odds and ends.

Classes are Saturdays, February 27 and March 5 & 19, from 10:30 a.m. till noon.  Bring along your J crochet hook and join the group.

Commemorative Train Program on March 29

The Amherst Public Library will be at the Open House on Tuesday, March 29, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Amherst Historical Society as part of the Commerative Program for the 100th Anniversary of the Triple Train Wreck in Amherst that occurred on March 29, 1916.

Many people have heard the stories or perhaps seen the tombstones at Crown Hill Cemetary marking the remains of some of the 27 people who lost their lives.  The program will include a grave side service as well as an open house at the Grange Hall on the grounds of the Amherst Historical Society with an extensive photo display and even a model train layout.

Read the accounts of some of the witnesses and hear about some of the famous people who road the rails into Amherst including film star Mary Pickford.  Check out the monument that will be dedicated on the grounds of the Historical Society.

Follow the local history tab on our library home page to have access to thousands of items that the library has scanned and uploaded to Ohio Memory Project in conjunction with the Ohio Historical Society.

Or check the library's Online Clipping File  where you can browse old newspaper clippings and view photos including our files on the 1916 Amherst Triple Train Wreck.
