What's Happening @ the Library

Welcome to our monthly newsletter.  We wanted to provide an update on how to access our services.  We have masks, wipes and gloves available for patrons who request them. We want you to use the library, but we want you to be safe, too. We are allowing patrons to reserve our study rooms (up to 3 days in advance) and we have tables out for use.   To reserve a study room visit: https://southplainfield.librarycalendar.com/reserve-room .Our hours are as follows:  Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 10am-8pm Tuesday, Friday 10am-6pm,  and Saturdays 11am-3pm.
The Library will be closed Friday April 7 and Saturday April 8 in observance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday.  We will re-open Monday April 10.

Contact-less Pickup is another great option for patrons who don't feel comfortable coming into the building, but who would still like to use our collection. If we don't have what you're looking for, you can go to our online catalog and search for what you're looking for and place it on hold from one of the libraries in our system.  If you're looking for some recommendations, check out our booklists for adults created by the librarians in a variety of genres. All the information is on our website (southplainfield.lib.nj.us/curbside.htm), and there are also written and video tutorials to help guide you in this process. All items can be picked up Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10:00 AM to 8 PM, Tuesday and Friday 10:00 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 11 AM to 3 PM. Staff will contact you when your items are ready to be picked up.

April is National Autism Awareness Month

Every April Autism Speaks celebrates World Autism Month, beginning with United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. Throughout the month, focus on sharing stories and providing opportunities to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism.  In April 2021 Autism Speaks is inviting the community to #LightUpWithKindness.  The Light It Up Blue initiative was created by Autism Speaks in 2010. Since that time, joined by the international autism community, hundreds of thousands of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities around the world light blue on World Autism Awareness Day (April 2) in recognition of people with autism. Other things happening in April:
National Caramel Day is April 5
On this day we celebrate a classic chewy candy: caramel. The form of chewy caramel we now love dates back to the 18th century. Caramel is formed by heating a mixture of various types of sugar until the molecules break down to form a new compound—a process known as "caramelization." Try your cooking skills at making your own caramel today to celebrate.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day is April 11

Whether we're talking about a simple slice of American cheese on white bread or aged brie on sourdough, grilled cheese always makes for an awesome meal. Whip up your favorite grilled cheese sandwich for breakfast, lunch, or dinner to celebrate today.

Earth Day is April 22
April 22, 1970, was the first Earth Day, and the date has been observed every year since as the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement. Our Mother Earth may only officially get one day a year, but we should try to take care of our planet every day. Today's the day to learn some ways you can help protect the environment.
