The New Jersey Library Construction Bond Act provides $125,000,000 for construction and renovation projects throughout the state of New Jersey if the voters approve it on the ballot on November 7. The program will be a 1:1 match of state and local dollars. The goals of the bond act are to upgrade public library facilities to meet community needs and to strengthen New Jersey’s economy by creating job opportunities for New Jersey businesses.

This funding will:

  • Provide much needed community infrastructure repairs and updates to library facilities, including bringing libraries into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, renovating library facilities, and providing technology upgrades.
  • Cost sharing program with state funds so construction projects are not dependent solely on local property taxes.
  • Creates opportunites to invest in the New Jersey workforce and local businesses through jobs, construction, and economic development.

This legislation was passed with strong bipartisan support in both the NJ General Assembly and the NJ Senate, and was signed into law by Governor Christie in July. It asks that the voters approve the state expenditure of funds with a ballot question on November 7.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early literacy program that encourages parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their children prior to the start of kindergarten. 

To participate, stop by the Children’s Desk at either the Main Library or Lake Hiawatha Branch for an information packet.  More information can be found online at http://1000booksbeforekindergarten.org/

Become a Friend of the Library!

Every library needs a volunteer group and the Parsippany-Troy Hills Public Library System is no exception! The purpose of the Friends of the Parsippany Library, a 501C3 organization, is to raise money for special library programs and collections of library materials. 

The Friends also serve as advocates for the library and support any legislation that benefits libraries.

The Library Board and administration are looking for Friends members as well as Friends officers. Friends members are 18 years of age and older and pay an annual donation of $15 or more.

Stempowher (STEM. Empower. Her.): Thinking Outside the Box

November 9

7:00pm-8:30pm

Grades 5-8

Stempowher is dedicated to empowering girls to develop a strong interest in STEM. We are strong believers in Benjamin Franklin’s, 'Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Students will quickly see this as they participate in a set of interactive mind-opening activities, culminating in a hands-on building challenge.

Since this is a student driven program, students will have the opportunity to request topics or projects of interest that they would like to explore in future workshops. Although this program is focused on girls due to their under representation in STEM, similar workshops will be open for boys in the future, as well.

Mock Math Olympiad

November 14

7:00pm-8:30pm

Grades 6-12

Both adults and teens can participate in this fun and interactive math experience where you will try to solve Math Olympiad level questions, while learning some cool math techniques.  Compete against your friends and parents for the chance to win on-the-spot prizes! 

This program is run by Accel Learning, Parsippany (https://parsippany.accellearning.com). Accel Learning is a center for Math Olympiads and Math Kangaroo training and contests.
