StarkFresh Seed Library

Rodman Library is once again partnering with StarkFresh to bring a “Seed Library” to our community. Beginning on Monday, February 3, vegetable and flower seeds will be displayed in the Library’s wooden card catalog located in the Library’s front lobby. Patrons may browse through the catalog and take the free seed packets of items they are interested in growing. The seed packets offered are the same ones seen in most retail stores with corn, beans, peas, squash, herbs, beets, radishes, watermelon, lettuce, cucumbers, cantaloupe, gourds, a few root vegetables such as turnips and a wide variety of flowers. Mid-March planting will give patrons ample time to start their seeds indoors.

StarkFresh, located in Canton, Ohio, states their mission is to “Improve healthy food access and advance food and farming education to everyone in Stark County.” The agency offers a Mobile Market, also known as the “Veggie Mobile” for the Stark County Community; educates the community on how to grow, eat, cook and preserve fresh food; forms partnerships with groups to teach vocational skills around farming that will create jobs and help increase produce yields and partners with libraries, businesses and organizations in Stark County to form a Seed Library to distribute vegetable and flower seeds to community members.

Seed packets have been generously donated by Stark County businesses and organizations. For more information on the Seed Library, call Rodman Public Library at 330-821-2665, ext. 107, or visit our website at www.rodmanlibrary.com. Coupons for the Troops

The Friends of Rodman Library is starting, in February, a collection of coupons for Support Our Troops® Troopons® to send to our military. This program enhances the well-being of overseas and domestic military families by sending them food, non-food, baby and pet manufacturer coupons to make their dollars go further. Most coupons will go over overseas to military bases while some will remain in the United States. While it’s easy for military families to obtain coupons from magazines and newspapers here at home, sometimes they can’t afford to purchase the items that provide the coupons. On overseas military bases, stores accept manufacturer coupons from the U.S.

Shopping abroad can be tough for military families. Currency exchange rates don't always benefit them, so every coupon that can help them save money in their on-base store makes their American dollar worth more for items off-base. Just stop by the Main Library at 215 E. Broadway St., with your donation of coupons and drop them into the collection box. The Friends of the Library will gather the coupons and see that they are sent to the appropriate sources. Thank you for your support!

AHS Chronicles Now Available on Alliance Memory

The Alliance High School Chronicle is now on Alliance Memory. Staff and volunteers at Rodman Public Library have completed the scanning and digitization of all Alliance High School yearbooks from 1910-2016. The project began in December 2017 and included 118 volumes, or 17,121 pages in total. In addition to the yearbooks are sound recordings that were issued with the 1958-1960 Chronicles. The recordings include interviews, musical excerpts from the band, orchestra and choir, plus sports highlights.

The Alliance High School Chronicle yearbooks are one of the most heavily used collections in the library. By digitizing them, the possibility of deterioration of the physical volumes is reduced while increasing access to the yearbooks, 24x7 from outside the library. The digital collection will continue to grow each year as a new volume is added. The yearbooks can be found at www.alliancememory.org, then select the Alliance Yearbooks collection. Rodman Library thanks the Alliance City Schools for their permission to digitize this collection.

Alliance Memory offers a view of Alliance’s history through photographs, personal recollections and documents. Collections include Alliance Places, Alliance People, Taylorcraft, Morgan Engineering, Carnation Festival, Alliance Yearbooks, Voices of Alliance, Library, City Directories and Recreational News. It began in 2004 and now includes over 22,000 photographs, documents, newspapers and media files. It is maintained by Rodman Public Library.

"Ohio Women Vote: 100 Years of Change" Display

Coming to Rodman Public Library January 30-March 1, “Ohio Women Vote: 100 Years of Change” is a traveling exhibit and accompanying curriculum produced by the Ohio History Connection to aide in statewide commemoration of the 19th amendment centennial. The exhibit will consist of pull up banners that will tell the story of women’s activism in the suffrage movement and the intersection of suffrage with other social movements. The exhibit will feature the stories and voices of Ohio women examining how Ohio women have engaged in voting and citizenship over time. This exhibit is free and open to the public during normal library hours. For more information, call 330-821-2665, ext. 107.
