Rodman Library Hosts Sports Columnist and Author Terry Pluto

Terry Pluto, sports columnist for The Plain Dealer, will be speaking on Tuesday, September 10, at 6:30 p.m., in Rodman Library Auditorium. Pluto has twice been honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors as the nation’s top sports columnist for medium-sized newspapers.

He is a nine-time winner of the Ohio Sports Writer of the Year award and has received more than 50 state and local writing awards. In 2005 he was inducted into the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame and in 2016 he won first place for best sports columnist and best sports writer in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors newspaper competition.

Pluto is the author of more than thirty books, including The Browns Blues?Two Decades of Utter Frustration: Why Everything Kept Going Wrong for the Cleveland Browns; The Comeback: LeBron, the Cavs & Cleveland; The Curse of Rocky Colavito (selected by the New York Times as one of the five notable sports books of 1989) and Loose Balls, which was ranked number 13 on Sports Illustrated’s list of the top 100 sports books of all time. He was called “Perhaps the best American writer of sports books,” by the Chicago Tribune in 1997.

Rep. Stoltzfus Announces Alliance Office Hours at RPL

Reggie StoltzfusState Representative Reggie Stoltzfus will be holding informal office hours at Rodman Public Library located at 215 E. Broadway St., Alliance, on Saturday, September 14, 2019, from 10 a.m. to noon. With meetings being taken on a first come first serve basis, the Representative asks that you please sign in upon arrival to help him keep track of who is up next. To keep things orderly, the Representative asks you to wait in a separate area until the previous meeting ends. Depending on volume, meetings will last for 5-10 minutes.

 “Please stop by if you have the chance and chat for a while about things going on in the community and the state. I look forward to hearing from my constituents about the things that matter to them. ” said Rep. Stoltzfus.

Monday Evening Book Discussion Group

Are you a book lover? Are you interested in meeting other book lovers to compare notes and have a lively discussion? Due to the Labor Day library closing on September 2, please join us at the evening book discussion group Monday, September 9, at 6:30 p.m., in Rodman Public Library’s Conference Room.

The Library Book by Susan OrleanThe Library Book, by Susan Orlean, is the book choice for discussion. The title is carried at Rodman Main and Branch Libraries—also available electronically.

Branch Book Club

The Branch Book Club will now meet on the third Monday of each month and is next scheduled for September 16, at 6:30 p.m.

Rodman Library’s computer classes continue in September with four offerings of Tech Time Thursday held on September 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 10 to 11 a.m. Our Computer Lab will be open for any questions you may have about your computer or electronic devices. Problems with your iPhone? iPad app questions? Android device concerns? We will be here to help you. No registration is required for these sessions. Alliance Vinyl Club "Spins" into Rodman Library

Vinyl recordsDo you collect vinyl records and enjoy listening to your favorites with like-minded people? Join us Monday, September 23, from 6:30-8:00 p.m., in the Main Auditorium where you can spin your favorite records, learn how to catalog a collection on an online database (Discogs) and share tips for caring for a vinyl collection.

Due to time limitations, only be a few selections per person will be played. A turntable will be provided, but we ask that you handle your personal records and assume any liability for normal wear and scratches.

History of Amateur Radio with Ron Rittenhouse

Amateur radio operatorsRon Rittenhouse, president of the Alliance Amateur Radio Club, will present The History of Amateur Radio on Monday, September 30, at 7 p.m., in Rodman Library’s Main Auditorium. The presentation features the concepts and functions of amateur radio, also known as ham radio. It is an avocation enjoyed by over 700,000 Americans and millions more worldwide.

The Alliance Amateur Radio Club (W8LKY) is celebrating 49 years of continuous service to the greater Alliance area. Amateur radio clubs, regulated by the Federal Communications Commission, serve their communities in time of emergency and also provide communications for community events.

The program is sponsored by the Alliance Historical Society and is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Main Library at 330-821-2665, ext. 101.

Make & Take Yarn Vase for Adults

Yarn VaseHave fun decorating your own vase with colorful yarn and then it take home! Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 14, at 2 p.m., in the Main Library Auditorium. All supplies will be furnished. This is a free event open to adults 18 and over. Limited to 30 participants so registration is needed.

Tabletop Strategy Game Night

Do you like to play games of strategy such as Ticket to Ride or Magic the Gathering? Or want to try something new? If so, join us in the library’s auditorium on Tuesday, September 17, at 6 p.m., to share your interest with other like-minded individuals of all ages.

Each month there will be a different featured game a staff member will teach you to play.

This month's featured game is Machi Koro.
