The Past in Review with Jack Weber, Jr.

Jack Weber, Jr.Jack Weber, Jr., will present The Past in Review on Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m., in Rodman Library’s Main Auditorium. One of the most popular features of The Alliance Review is “The Past in Review” column that chronicles what happened in Alliance 100, 75, 50 and 25 years ago. Weber, who researches and authors the column, will discuss why the column was started, what he looks for and what he leaves out. He will also share photographs and memorable stories that he has included in the column along with “the rest of the stories” not included in the paper.Read more...

Evening Book Discussion Group

The Other WomanAre you a book lover? Are you interested in meeting other book lovers to compare notes and have a lively discussion? Join us at the evening book discussion group Monday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m., in Rodman Public Library’s Conference Room. The Other Woman, by Daniel Silva, is the book choice for discussion. The title is carried at Rodman Main and Branch Libraries—also available electronically.

Book Club at the Branch

The All-Girl Filling Station's Last ReunionThe Branch Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month and is next scheduled for March 6, at 6:30 p.m.

The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion, by Fannie Flagg, is the book selection for discussion. It is available at Rodman Main and Branch Libraries—also available electronically.

The book selection for April is The Women, by T. C. Boyle. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, stop at the Branch Library or call 330-821-1313.

Winter Computer Classes Conclude in March

Rodman Library’s computer classes conclude in March. Classes will be held on March 5, 7, 12, 13 & 21. Hands-on classes are limited to nine (9) persons and two (2) alternates. All classes start at 10 a.m., except where noted at 6:30 p.m., and last about one hour. Registration is required − online, in person or call 330-821-2665.

StarkFresh Seed Library

Seed bankRodman Library is once again partnering with StarkFresh to bring a “Seed Library” to our community. Beginning on Monday, March 1, vegetable and flower seeds will be displayed in the Library’s wooden card catalog located in the Library’s front lobby. Patrons may browse through the catalog and take the free seed packets of items they are interested in growing. The seed packets offered are the same ones seen in most retail stores with corn, beans, peas, squash, herbs, beets, radishes, watermelon, lettuce, cucumbers, cantaloupe, gourds, a few root vegetables such as turnips and a wide variety of flowers. Mid-March planting will give patrons ample time to start their seeds indoors. Read more...

Before Alliance: New Opportunities, New Outlooks in Ohio, 1805-1850

Anna Briggs BentleyThe Alliance Area Preservation Society (AAPS) President Robb Hyde, and friends, will present Before Alliance: New Opportunities, New Outlooks in Ohio 1805-1850, at the Alliance Area Preservation Society's Annual Meeting, Monday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m., in Rodman Public Library Auditorium.

Much of Alliance’s history actually predates the founding of the city. The 1840 census showed that there were over 10,000 people living within the confines of Lexington, Marlboro, Washington, Smith and Knox Townships. The area was filled with homesteads, farms and a scattering of small villages, none with more than a few hundred people. Before there was a town of Alliance there were established businesses, churches and schools. Social and political movements were part of community life, and local residents were leaders in these nationwide movements.Read more...

Rewired: An Unlikely Doctor, A Brave Amputee

Rewired“An unlikely doctor, a brave amputee, and the medical miracle that made history.” Dr. Ajay K. Seth, an orthopaedic surgeon, and Melissa Loomis will share their incredible medical journey with a presentation at Rodman Public Library on Monday, March 18, at 7 p.m., in the library’s auditorium, followed by a book signing of “Rewired.”

In 2015 Melissa Loomis, a resident of North Canton, Ohio, was bitten by a raccoon. At the time it seemed like a minor injury, however, it turned into a life-or-death medical crisis. She suffered from a severe infection that antibiotics did not clear. It ultimately resulted in the amputation of her arm. In his book, “Rewired,” Dr. Seth states, “What makes Melissa Loomis different is her unique combination of thoughtfulness, kindness, eerie calm and (especially) courage...."Read more...

One Book One Community

The Handmaid's TaleThe Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood, has been selected as the featured read for the Alliance area One Book One Community program for 2019.

These programs to discuss aspects of the book will be held in March.

  • Tuesday, March 19, at Union Avenue United Methodist Church’s Fellowship Hall: University of Mount Union’s Associate Professor and Chair of Political Science and International Studies Francis Schortgen will address political resistance.

  • Tuesday, March 26, at the YWCA: University of Mount Union’s Theresa Davis Assistant Professor of History and Department Chair and University of Mount Union’s David Thiele Associate Professor of English and Department Chair will present on an area of history as regards the themes and issues in Atwood’s novel.

Atwood will present the Schooler Lecture at the University of Mount Union at 8 p.m., April 10. Read more...
