Annual “Tick Talk” May 12, 7:00 pm

May is Lyme Disease Awareness month, and the Camden Public Library will again host Lyme disease specialist Dr. Bea Szantyr, on Thursday evening, May 12, at 7:00 pm. Dr. Szantyr’s “Tick Talk” is an informative look at ticks, the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi which causes Lyme disease, the incidence of Lyme disease in Maine, the difficulties of medical diagnosis, and steps you can take to protect yourself and your family. Concern about Lyme disease is growing as the incidence of Lyme cases increases. The mild weather this winter means the ticks are already active in the woods and fields. Dr. Szantyr notes, “Lyme disease does occur nationwide, and there is a concentration of cases in the Northeast, upper midwest, and parts of California. Cases are reported from every state in the nation, but unfortunately when the disease is uncommon in an area, a diagnosis is more likely to be missed!” Click here for more information..

7:00 pm

Author Laurie Schreiber will visit Camden to talk about “Boatbuilding on Mt. Desert Island” and her new book by that title. Mount Desert Island possesses a rich and diverse history of boatbuilding. Chester Clement was the first of the “lobster yacht” builders, and Bunker and Ellis elevated the concept. Henry Hinckley started on an old boat-repair wharf and built a world-class brand. Members of the Rich family produced everything from gleaming yachts to rugged workboats, while Sim Davis and Bink Sargent were considered the experts for big draggers. The author is a long-time resident of Bass Harbor. For 22 years, as a staff writer for The Bar Harbor Times, she wrote hundreds of articles on diverse topics of local and state interest. The talk is on Thursday evening, May 19, at 7:00 pm..

The Energy Committee has invited representatives from Sundog Solar, Evergreen Home Performance, and ReVision Energy to present the technical and economic factors involved in improving building efficiency and generating solar power. The talk is very timely, considering the recent veto of the solar legislation by the governor. The veto means that Maine’s solar options remain unchanged only in the near term. The panel will cover in general the two broad paths that individuals, businesses, and non-profits can take to self-sufficiency: building solar capability, or increased building performance and efficiency..
