Library to Benefit from “Hannaford Helps” Reusable Bag Program in April

The Camden Public Library has been chosen by Hannaford’s as the next beneficiary of the “Hannaford Helps” Reusable Bag program. During April, the Camden Library will receive a $1 direct donation, PLUS another $1 “matching” donation from Hannaford’s, for each purchase of the Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag at the Camden Hannaford’s. That’s a total of $2 donation for each bag! In just the first week, the program generated over $110 in donations to the Library! The more bags purchased, the more the Library benefits. Click here for more information.

Maritime Month Continues!

We are enjoying a great Maritime Month! We have hosted poets, musicians, lighthouse keepers, and schooner captains so far and are looking forward to a meteorologist, a scientist, a photographer, and an author as well as a movie during the rest of the month. Meteorologist Ken McKinley April 14, 7:00 pm

Meteorologist Ken McKinley will present “An Analysis of Weather Factors Affecting Recent Big Ship Disasters” as part of Maritime Month. The talk will be on Thursday, April 14, at 7:00 pm and will cover recent incidents such as the El Faro sinking, the Anthem of the Seas incident, and the Bounty. Ken McKinley founded Locus Weather in Camden in 1991. While a large variety of clients are served, a significant portion of the business is focused on the marine community. McKinley has become well known in recreational yachting circles and has provided weather routing services for many yachts worldwide. Click here for more information.

Shakespeare Call for Volunteers

The CAMDEN SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL is seeking volunteers for their 2016 summer season. They are especially looking for ushers, box office personnel, and folks who might want to host an out-of-town actor. The plays they are presenting this summer are The Tempest and The Comedy of Errors. 2016 is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death -- be a part of this special Shakespearean year! Dragon Farm Salons Hosts Penthea Burns April 17, 2:00 pm

The next Dragon Farm salon, co-hosted with Camden Public Library, will be on Sunday, April 17, at 2:00 pm, featuring Wabanaki REACH: Reconciliation, Engagement, Advocacy, Change, and Healing, with Penthea Burns. Burns will speak about the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth & Reconciliation Commission, focused on the trauma, losses, and resulting needs of Tribal members who were taken from their family, culture, and community when they were placed in state foster care. Click here for more information.

Tech Tuesday on “Google Apps” April 19, 3:00 pm

The next “Tech Tuesday” topic will be "Google Apps: Maximize all the free tools Google offers!" The schedule of the free tech sessions is changing as of the first of May: "Tech Tuesdays" will become "Cyber Sundays," and the tech assistance sessions will be offered WEEKLY on SUNDAYS at 2:00 pm. Songwriters Continue April 19, 6:00 pm

Songwriters meet monthly in preparation for performing their new works at the Library Coffeehouse in June. We will follow the same format as last year, meeting 6:00-8:00 pm on Third Tuesdays; the next session is Tuesday, April 19, at 6:00 pm. Movie “Life of Pi” April 19, 6:00 pm

The library will host a free screening of “The Life of Pi” (director Ang Lee, 2012, PG, 127 min.), on Tuesday evening, April 19, at 6:00 pm. The film was chosen for Maritime Month for its maritime content and also because our speaker on April 28, Steve Callahan, was a consultant in the production of “Life of Pi.” “I had to tame him,” (Pi) realizes. “It was not a question of him or me, but of him and me. “Up, Up and Away” Vacation Camp
April 20, 21, 22

Come join Miss Amy and Miss Katie for three days packed with airborne fun! Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, April 20, 21, and 22, from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, for school-age children (Kindergarten and up, younger siblings always welcome). Space is limited; call the library at 236-3440 to register.  Vacation Camp features stories, crafts, games, and activities! Day 1: Paper Airplanes; Day 2: Balloons; Day 3: Mini-Kites.

“The Amazing Life of Iron!” April 21, 7:00 pm

Dr. David Emerson will give a talk on “The Amazing Life of Iron!” on Thursday, April 21. The talk will be hosted by Midcoast Audubon Society and is also part of the annual Maritime Month speaker series at the Library. Dr. Emerson is a Senior Research Scientist at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in Boothbay; he studies microbes that live on iron in environments as varied as undersea volcanoes, mudflats, freshwater wetlands, and groundwater. The practical implications relate to the potential for using these microbes to remove pollutants from groundwater. Click here for more information..

Book Sale April 23 & 24

With spring in the air, it is time to think about getting books about warm weather activities — planting your vegetable and flower gardens, taking healthy hikes in the country, running a marathon, finding recipes for the barbeque, and traveling to exotic places. You will find books on these topics and more at the Camden Public Library’s book sale on Saturday, April 23, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Sunday, April 24, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the library’s Picker Room. New at this sale will be a large collection of books on quilting, a new supply of children’s and teen books, and a large collection of cookbooks! Click here for more information.

“TLC Day” Set for April 23

Our Annual TLC DAY in the Amphitheatre and Harbor Park is set for Saturday morning, April 23, 9:00-noon, according to Parks Director Dave Jackson. “Volunteers needed!” says Dave. “Bring rakes and other hand tools, and a good pair of work gloves, and be prepared to pitch in. We can spruce up the Park and Amphitheatre in no time.”.

As part of a larger weekend event called “Moving Explorations in Community (ME in Community),” there will be free family activities in the Camden Amphitheatre and Harbor Park. Simply Books! is the library’s book group designed for book lovers. There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. “Your Next Career Move: Tools to Get Started” April 25, 12:00 noon

The careers workshop originally scheduled for April 12 has been RESCHEDULED to Monday, April 25, at 12:00 noon. This workshop will help point you in the right direction. It will cover what to consider when making a career choice, the steps involved in creating a career plan, and the resources available to help you succeed. Nautical Photography of Alison Langley April 26, 7:00 pm

As part of Maritime Month, the Camden Public Library will host an illustrated talk on nautical photography by Alison Langley of Camden. The talk will be on Tuesday, April 26, at 7:00 pm. Alison Langley has earned international recognition for her exquisite nautical photography, capturing the light, beauty, and motion of classic yachts. She has had work published in magazines such as Cruising World, Yachting, Sail, and Travel & Leisure. A personal project documenting wooden boat restorations brought her to Maine, and she now lives in Camden year-round. Click here for more information..

“Ocean Survival: From Fish Guts to Pi” with Steve Callahan April 28, 7:00 pm

Steve Callahan survived 76 days at sea in a life raft and wrote about his saga in Adrift, a best-seller published in 1986. He is still a sailor, yacht designer, marine writer, public speaker, and now a technical advisor to feature films, including “Life of Pi” and “In the Heart of the Sea.” Callahan will be talking about “Ocean Survival: From Fish Guts to Pi,” comparing 19th-century survival with modern techniques.
