“Everybody Loves Pirates” February 3, 6:00 pm, Camden Opera House

The Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers will perform “Everybody Loves Pirates” at the Camden Opera House on February 3, as part of Camden’s Winterfest celebration. Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers is a troupe based in Bar Harbor, comprised of three siblings –brothers Erik and Brian Torbeck and sister Robin (Torbeck) Erlandsen. The performance is hosted by the Winterfest Committee and the Camden Public Library. Tickets are available in advance at the library; tickets are $5, with a Family Rate of $15. Teens and Dating Violence February 4, 5:30 pm

New Hope for Women will host a special event for teens, “In Their Shoes: Teens and Dating Violence,” at the Camden Public Library on Thursday, February 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Everyone knows someone who is in an unhealthy relationship. Ever wonder how they got there? Why they make the decisions they do? Ever think it couldn't happen to you? Join New Hope for this interactive snapshot of teenagers in abusive relationships and learn how you can better support your friends. “Fairies in the Snow” Tea Party
February 6, 1:00 pm

Saturday, February 6, is “Take Your Child to the Library Day”! To join the celebration, the Library will host “Fairies in the Snow!” with author Liza Gardner Walsh and illustrator Hazel Mitchell. Kids can join in fairy attire for a special afternoon of reading, crafts, and activities. The author and illustrator will have books available for sale and signing. There will be light refreshments. It's also part of Camden's Winterfest Week!.

Dragon Farm Salon Hosts Allison McKellar February 7, 2:00 pm

Dragon Farm Salons offers workshops, seminars, lectures, and other educational programs on current topics that empower women and men to reach outside of their individual lives and build strong, sustainable, and peaceful local communities. “Cannabis as a Medication” February 8, 12:00 noon

The Destination Wellness Brown Bag Lunch Series on Monday, February 8, will feature Dr. Lauren Ball, who will talk about the use of cannabis as a medication. Despite the growing scientific support, controversies still exist regarding the use of marijuana as a medicine. Dr. Ball will briefly review the history of medical cannabis and then discuss how the active compounds in cannabis work in the body and why it is effective in relieving a variety of symptoms associated with different types of diseases. Click here for more information..

The Camden Garden Club will again host its popular “Winter Horticulture Series” at the Camden Public Library. International Aid Work in the Congo February 9, 7:00 pm

The Camden Conference will host a presentation on “International Aid Work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: local perspectives and unintended consequences” with Camden resident, Marisa Lloyd on Tuesday, February 9, at 7:00 pm. Lloyd has worked with various NGOs and UN agencies in Congolese refugee camps and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since 2007. Marisa is currently the U.S. Representative and International Coordinator for H.O.P.E. The French and Indian Wars in Maine February 14, 2:00 pm

For eight decades, an epic power struggle raged across the Maine frontier. Between 1675 and 1759, England, France, and Native Americans clashed in a series of six wars to defend territorial claims and the ability to call Maine home. Though the showdown between France and Great Britain was international in scale, the decidedly local conflicts in Maine pitted European settlers against the region’s native inhabitants.The Camden-Rockport Historical Society will host author Mike Dekker at their Winter Speaker Series at the Camden Public Library on Sunday afternoon, February 14, at 2:00 pm. Click here for more information..

Songwriters Session February 16, 6:00 pm

Songwriters will meet monthly through the winter in preparation for performing their new works at the Library Coffeehouse in June. We will follow the same format as last year, meeting 6:00-8:00 pm on Third Tuesdays in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room at the Camden Public Library; the next session is Tuesday, February 16, drop-ins are welcome. “Animal Tracking on Vinalhaven” February 18, 7:00 pm

The Midcoast Audubon Society’s monthly speaker series will feature a slide show on “Owls are easy, otters are easier: year round animal tracking on Vinalhaven” with naturalist Kirk Gentalen. The talk is on Thursday evening, February 18, at 7:00 pm, all are welcome. For the last eleven years Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) steward/naturalist Kirk Gentalen has been learning about Vinalhaven Island’s robust owl and river otter populations. Through tracking, photography, and just plain old observing Kirk has been documenting (part of) the owl and otter story on Vinalhaven Island and is looking forward to sharing stories and slides of his findings. Click here for more information..
