Camden Public Library to Take On Summer Harbor Arts Festival

The Camden Public Library has exciting news! We are taking on the Summer Harbor Arts festival in addition to the Fall Harbor Arts & Books festival. The summer arts festival is already scheduled for July 16 and 17, 2016. We will continue to offer our annual outdoor giant booksale under the tents as well. Originally begun as the Carol Sebold Arts & Crafts show, the juried show has been hosted annually by the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce for several years and by the C-R-L Chamber of Commerce for years before that. The Library will carry on the tradition of excellent juried arts, with added festive flavor and emphasis on quality and publicity. Click here for more information..

“Quilts, Quilts, & Quilts” on Display in January

Quiltmaker/fiber artist Janet B. Elwin will be exhibiting a collection of quilts and wall hangings of every size in the Picker Room during the month of January. Elwin, the Artist of the Month, has had an adventuresome career: teaching quilting techniques for years in adult education, colleges, quilt guilds, and seminars throughout the US, and from Japan to Israel in a career spanning over 30 years. Janet is now happily at home in Walpole, Maine, still coming up with new and creative quilts and wall hangings. Click here for more information..

“Jumpstart January” Offers Hands-On Workshops for Adults

The Library will once again offer a series of hands-on workshops for adults during “Jumpstart January.” The first workshop in the series is “Essential Oil Health Creations” led by Marcie Howard and Tayler Phillbrook. Please note that space is limited, and the January 7 workshop is already full. Sign up right away for the remaining workshops! The workshops are all on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, beginning at either 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm, please check the schedule. “Kosti Ruohomaa, Legendary Photographer of Maine” January 10, 2:00 pm

The Camden-Rockport Historical Society will host a speaker series at the Camden Public Library again this winter. The first topic in the series will be “Kosti Ruohomaa, Legendary Photographer of Maine,” presented by Deanna Bonner-Ganter, the Maine State Museum’s Curator of Photography, Art, and Archives, on Sunday, January 10, at 2:00 pm. Bonner-Ganter is also author of the new book, Kosti Ruohomaa the Photographer Poet, which will be available in late January. Click here for more information..

“Slow Down Aging at the Cellular Level” January 11, 12:00 noon

Camden Philosophical Society January 12, 4:00 pm

The Camden Philosophical Society will host a general meeting on Tuesday, January 12, of all participants interested  in discussing the future activities of the society and in particular what topics will be the focus for its reading and discussion group over the coming year. “Your Next Career Move: Tools to Get Started” January 14, 5:30 pm

This career workshop will help point you in the right direction as you start your career move. We will cover what to consider when making a career choice, the steps involved in creating a career plan, and the resources available to help you succeed. The workshop takes place on Thursday evening, January 14, 5:30-7:00 pm, led by Melinda Wildes of New Ventures Maine. “Sumi-e Landscape of Maine” with Frederica Marshall January 14, 6:00 pm

Learn to paint the gorgeous environment of Maine in the ancient style of Asian Brush Painting with international award-winning artist Frederica Marshall. Birch and evergreen trees, rocks, sky, and water will create an amazing ink and watercolor experience for you! No previous experience is necessary, a beginner’s mind is welcome! The workshop is part of the library’s “Jumpstart January” series of workshops. Ice Carving Demonstration January 17, 1:00 pm

The Camden Public Library will again host a live Ice-Carving Demonstration with master ice carver Tim Pierce, on Sunday, January 17, at 1:00 pm. Pierce is the Executive Chef of the Samoset Resort and has been enthusiastically carving and teaching ice sculpting for years. The demonstration is specifically for the teams that will be making ice sculptures at Camden’s Winterfest, but the demonstration is a wonderful and intriguing outdoor event and is open to everyone. Click here for more information..

“Tech Tuesday” January 19, 3:00 pm

The topic for Tech Tuesday will be “Facebook 102: Privacy Settings.” We will discuss in detail all the options Facebook offers in account settings. Who can see your photos? How do you exclude your name from being used in advertisements? And much, much, much more. Bring your device and arrive 15 minutes early to make sure you can connect to our wi-fi network before class begins. Songwriters Begin Again January 19,
6:00 pm

The popular Songwriters Series begins again in January. Songwriters meet monthly through the winter in preparation for performing their new works at the Library Coffeehouse in June. We will follow the same format as last year, meeting 6:00-8:00 pm on Third Tuesdays in the 2nd Floor Meeting Room here at the Camden Public Library. Our troubadours John Nicholas and David Dodson have again offered to lead the sessions. “Islam and Jihad-ism across Africa” January 19, 7:00 pm

Seth Singleton will give a talk titled “Islam and Jihad-ism across Africa” at the Camden Public Library on January 19 at 7:00 pm. The lecture is free and open to all. From Somalia and Kenya to Mali, along the inner African frontier dividing Islamic Africa from non-Muslims, jihadists bring violence and try to displace local African Muslim traditions. “Birding in Cuba” January 21, 7:00 pm

The Midcoast Audubon Society’s monthly speaker series will feature “Birding in Cuba” with Jody Telfair on Thursday evening, January 21, at 7:00 pm. All are welcome. Jody participated in a two-week bird survey in  Cuba through the Caribbean Conservation Trust in February, 2014. Cuba is currently the least developed of any large island in the Caribbean, providing crucial wintering habitat for our beloved neotropical migrants. The Library will once again host the Community Ice Carving celebration in the Amphitheatre and inside the library, with ice carving, music, and hot food outdoors, and live music and kids’ activities indoors, on Saturday afternoon, January 30, from noon to 3:00 pm.
