April is Maritime Month at the
Camden Public Library!
We’re looking forward to some intriguing presentations! The Penobscot Marine Museum will again bring one of their vintage photography collections to display in the Picker Room. This year, the display will be “The Allure of the Lighthouse: The Postcard View” from their Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Company collection. New “Evergreen” Donations!
Ever wish there were an easy way to make monthy donations to the library? The library can now accept donations in the popular “Evergreen” format. The Evergreen style of giving allows you to budget donations in any amount you like, and the donations will be made automatically. John Muir Trail March 31, 7:00 pm
Rockport resident Tim Seymour hiked the John Muir Trail in California at the end of last summer and has returned with incredibly beautiful images to share. He will present a multi-media show at the Camden Public Library on Thursday evening, March 31, at 7:00 pm. The John Muir Trail is the “premier hiking trail in the United States.” The trail starts in America’s treasure, Yosemite National Park, and continues 211 miles through the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Sequoia National Park, King’s Canyon National Park, and ends at the highest peak in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney at 14,505 ft..
Poetry of the Sea April 3, 2:00 pm
In celebration of Maritime Month, Gordon Bok and Carol Rohl will present selections of maritime poetry, stories, and music, on Sunday afternoon, April 3, at 2:00 pm. April is also Poetry Month, and Carol will include poetry inspired by her recovery from a stroke in 2004. A folk musician for the last 60 years, Gordon performs traditional and contemporary music a cappella as well as with guitar accompaniment, with a long-standing focus on maritime themes. Carol plays the folk harp and has joined her husband in concert from the UK to Australia since 1987. Her stroke in 2004 changed her playing style and she has found poetry to be a satisfying creative expression as well. Click here for more information..
Author Padma Venkatraman April 5,

Padma Venkatraman was born in Chennai, India, and is now an award-winning American author living in Rhode Island. She will visit the Camden Public Library on Tuesday, April 5, at 4:00 pm, to talk about the status of women in India and throughout history. Dr. Venkatraman has lived in five countries, worked as chief scientist on oceanographic vessels, and even spent time underwater before becoming an author. Her latest novel, A Time to Dance, was awarded several Starred Reviews (Kirkus, Booklist, SLJ, VOYA and BCCB) and received numerous awards. Click here for more information..
Gallery Talk on “The Allure of the Lighthouse” April 5, 7:00 pm
For Maritime Month 2016, the Camden Public Library will host not only a series of noted speakers on maritime topics, but also a photo exhibit from the Penobscot Marine Museum. The exhibit, “The Allure of the Lighthouse: The Postcard View” will be on display throughout the month of April. Captains Bob Pratt and Paul Dilger will give an illustrated gallery talk on the lighthouses in the exhibit on Tuesday evening, April 5, at 7:00 pm. Click here for more information.

The Camden Public Library will be the benficiary of the “Hannaford Helps” Reusable Bag Program. During the month of April, the Library will receive a $1 direct donation from each purchase of the Hannaford Helps Reusable Bag at the CAMDEN Hannaford’s. “Exotic Jewish Communities” Class Begins April 6, 12:00 noon
The Library will host a Coastal Senior College class, “Exotic Jewish Communities: Exploring Their History, Culture and Musical Traditions,” led by instructor Steven Shaw, beginning on Wednesday, April 6, at 12:00 noon. The class will continue for eight Wednesdays, 12 noon to 2:30 pm. Beginning with the destruction of their First Temple in 586 BCE by Nebuchadnezzer, King of Babylonia, Jewish communities have dispersed, and existed and often flourished in many different lands. Their culture has always reflected the influences of the wider society where they lived, while maintaining ancient traditions firmly rooted in the Bible and Talmud. Click here for more information.
Library Coffeehouse Features Meteora April 7
The trio Meteora, comprised of Will Brown of Lincolnville and Jim Loney and Kat Logan of Friendship, are favorite performers at the Camden Library Coffeehouse and will return for an April 7 appearance. They had to postpone their concert last November due to a bout with pneumonia, but they are back as strong as ever this spring! Admission to the Coffeehouse is only $7, refreshments will be available, doors open at 6:30 for the 7:00 pm Coffeehouse on Thursday, April 7. Click here for more information..
“The Modern Documentary” Class Begins April 8, 1:00 pm
The Library will host a Coastal Senior College class, “How the Modern Documentary Can Shape the Public Mind II,” led by instructor William Solomon, beginning Friday, April 8, at 1:00 pm. The class will continue for eight Fridays, 1:00 – 3:00 pm, April 8 to May 27. The sensory overload created by the 24/7 news cycle created by print, broadcast, and internet is a major contributor to a growing gap between our awareness of current events and our ability to comprehend them. We are aware of what is happening but rarely are given a great deal in the way of reasons why these critical events are occurring. Click here for more information.
Camden-Rockport Historical Society Hosts Kerry Hardy April 10, 2:00 pm
As part of its Winter Speaker Series, the Camden-Rockport Historical Society will host a talk by Kerry Hardy at the Camden Public Library on Sunday, April 10, at 2:00 pm. Hardy is the author of Notes on a Lost Flute: A Field Guide to the Wabanaki. Hardy’s topic will be the old Indian highways and roads of the early days in Knox County. Hardy brings together his expertise in forestry, horticulture, and environmental science to tell us about New England when its primary inhabitants were the native Wabanaki tribes. Prevent Lyme and Tick-borne Disease April 11, 12:00 noon
Destination Wellness Midcoast Maine (DWMM) will present a Brown Bag Lunch talk, “Prevent Lyme and tick-borne disease: Enjoy Maine outdoors the way life should be,” with Paula Jackson Jones and co-founders of Midcoast Lyme Disease Support, on Monday, April 11, at 12:00 noon. The Camden Philosophical Society will host a discussion based on selected writings of Karl Marx, the nineteenth-century German philosophical, economic, and political thinker. Schooner Captains April 12, 7:00 pm
As part of Maritime Month 2016, Gene McKeever will lead a panel discussion with local schooner captains and discuss what it’s really like to run a sailing business on the rugged coast of Maine. The event will be on Tuesday evening, April 12, at 7:00 pm. McKeever is a Certified Insurance Counselor with Allen Insurance and Financial. He is also the long-time chairman of Camden’s Harbor Committee and publishes a monthly column in WorkBoat magazine. Gene’s specialty is marine insurance – on land and at sea, and he’s known around the U.S. for his work with tall ships, windjammers, and other historic vessels. Click here for more information..
Meteorologist Ken McKinley April 14, 7:00 pm
Meteorologist Ken McKinley will present “An Analysis of Weather Factors Affecting Recent Big Ship Disasters” as part of Maritime Month. The talk will be on Thursday, April 14, at 7:00 pm and will cover recent incidents such as the El Faro sinking, the Anthem of the Seas incident, and the Bounty. Ken McKinley founded Locus Weather in Camden in 1991. While a large variety of clients are served, a significant portion of the business is focused on the marine community. McKinley has become well known in recreational yachting circles and has provided weather routing services for many yachts worldwide. Click here for more information.
Dragon Farm Salons Hosts Penthea Burns April 17, @ 2:00 pm
The next Dragon Farm salon, co-hosted with Camden Public Library, will be on Sunday, April 17, at 2:00 pm, featuring Wabanaki REACH: Reconciliation, Engagement, Advocacy, Change, and Healing, with Penthea Burns. Burns will speak about her involvement in the development of the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth & Reconciliation Commission, focused on the trauma, losses and resulting needs of Tribal members who were taken from their family, culture, and community when they were placed in state foster care.
