Author Kenneth Davis October 29
Best-selling author Kenneth Davis will visit the Camden Public Library as part of “Discover History Month” on Thursday evening, October 29, at 7:00 pm. Davis will be talking about his latest book, The Hidden History of America at War: Untold Tales from Yorktown to Fallujah, just published in May. Davis is also the author of Don’t Know Much About History, which spent 35 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and gave rise to the “Don’t Know Much About” series of books and audios. Pumpkin Palooza! October 29
Bring your pumpkin to the Amphitheatre or drop it off during the day in the Children’s Garden with your name on it. We'll be showing off all the jack-o’-lanterns at 7:00 pm! All ages and carving talents welcome and encouraged to participate. This is a great event for kids, families, adults, and teens, so get carving and let’s see how many pumpkins we can get in the Amphitheatre on the steps all lit up! Let’s go for a record number! This is a great way for more people to enjoy your jack-o’-lantern! Bring it home right after and use it for Halloween. This has been an annual event for five years. Click here for more information..
Simply Books! October 31
Simply Books! is the library’s book group for adults, designed for book lovers. There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. We simply bring along whatever book we’re currently reading and share it with the group. Simply Books! meetings are usually on the fourth Saturday of the month, but this month the group will meet on Saturday, October 31, at 2:00 pm. There will be no meeting in November, and the December meeting will be on December 5. The schedule will be back to normal on the fourth Saturday of January (January 23). URock Information Sessions November 2 and November 10
The University College at Rockland is part of the University of Maine system. Chip Curry, Student Services Coordinator at URock, will hold two information sessions to encourage new students and returning students. The sessions will be Monday morning, November 2, 11:00 am to 12:00 noon, in the second floor meeting room, and Tuesday evening, November 10, at 5:30 pm in the Picker Room. Curry will discuss the courses, programs, support services, and scholarship and financial aid opportunities that are available. Click here for more information..
“Writers Read” November 2
The dedicated writers of the Coastal Senior College Writers’ Group will be giving readings from their current work at the “Writers Read” event at the Camden Public Library on Monday, November 2, at 1:00 pm. “Writers Read” features authors from Marilyn Muth’s writing group presenting their own poems and short stories. This annual presentation has attracted a larger audience for each of the past five years. The audience has greatly enjoyed hearing examples of the creativity and humor of some of their fellow Coastal Senior College members. Click here for more information..
Tuesday Medicare Sessions
Lilly Filippi of United Healthcare will give a free presentation covering Medicare basics, with parts A, B, C and D, and answering all questions. The sessions will be repeated every Tuesday morning, 10:00 to 11:30 am, in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library, through November 17..
Tech Tuesday: Facebook 101 November 3
“Facebook 101”: Learn about social media using Facebook, the world’s largest social networking website, with over 1 billion users, at the Tech Tuesday session on November 3 at 3:00 pm. Stroke Support Group November 4
The next Midcoast Stroke Support Group meeting will be on Wednesday, November 4, at 10:00 am. “We welcome survivors, family, and friends of stroke survivors, or really anyone faced with a neurological challenge,” said Carol Rohl. “We are finding that encouragement and contact with others in similar situations is very supportive.” For more information call 273-2090. Library Coffeehouse Features Will Brown and Fredi LaPorte November 5
The musical offering on November 5 for the Camden Library Coffeehouse has been reconfigured somewhat. We will be hosting Will Brown of Lincolnville and Fredi LaPorte of Searsport, stepping in for Meteora. Will Brown and Fredi LaPorte will capably pick up the slack; Will is a member not only of Meteora but also several other groups in the area and enthusiastically recruited Fredi LaPorte from the Belfast Bay Fiddlers to join him on Thursday, November 5, at 7:00 pm. Book Launch and Fashion Show November 6
Author Ronni Arno and the Camden Public Library will host a fashion show and book launch party on Friday, November 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The evening will feature a fashion show with kids ages 9 to 13 and a reading and book signing with local author Ronni Arno, complete with food, fun, fashion, and prizes! Art Exhibit by Midcoast Stroke Support Group Reception November 8
The Midcoast Stroke Support Group will display “There is Life after Stroke,” an exhibit of artwork by members of the group during the month of November at the Camden Public Library. There will be an art reception for the group on Sunday afternoon, November 8, at 2:00 pm in the Picker Room. The Midcoast Stroke Support Group has been meeting regularly since the spring of 2010. Members hail from Belfast to Bristol and meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon in the Walsh History Center. “As survivors, families, and friends, we come together to listen and support each other’s healing journey,” says Rohl. The benefits of the creative process are many in the healing following a stroke. Exploring a passion and using one’s body and mind to express feelings and emotions contribute to a sense of well-being, joy, and peace of mind that make each day worth living. Discussion of the Moral Philosophy of David Hume November 10
The Camden Philosophical Society’s Reading Group hosts a monthly discussion session on the second Tuesday of the month. This month the group will meet on November 10 at 4:00 pm; the topic will be “The Moral Philosophy of David Hume,” on the work of the Scottish philosopher and his influence on contemporary philosophy and ethics. The discussion will focus on the first five sections of Hume’s Enquiry on the Principles of Morals (1751) and will take place in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library from 4-6 pm. Get Started on Your Career Plan November 12
Who do you see when you look in the mirror? Your career choices are a reflection of where you’ve been, what you know, and where you want to go. New Ventures Maine (formerly Maine Center for Women, Work, and Community) will offer a free workshop on career planning on Thursday, November 12, 7:00-8:30 pm in the History Center Meeting Room. This workshop will help point you in the right direction. You will identify your unique career interest code, review what to consider when making a career choice, and learn about local training options (including possible funding) that will increase your employability, job satisfaction, and earning potential. “Weathering Shame” November 12
Weathering Shame, by one of Maine’s leading weathermen, WCSH 6 News Center’s Kevin Mannix and his social worker wife Linda Rota, is a personal journey of shame and stigma penned by two respected professionals. The story is about their individual experiences with shame throughout their childhood and adult lives, stemming from growing up with alcoholism, severe depression, and suicide. Indoor Book Sale November 14 & 15
It is time to stock up on books to read by the fireplace or in a warm bed during the coming winter! And the Camden Public Library’s November 14-15 book sale in the Picker Room is the place to find those books. Sale hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday. This will be the last book sale until next spring! Current fiction in hardcover and quality softcover will be priced at $2 each. There will be a great number of books covering a variety of topics including the arts, biographies, cooking, foreign language, gardening, health, history, government, Maine, marine, nature, religion, science, sports, and travel. There will also be a large selection of children’s books priced at a $1 and young adult books at $2 each.There will be hundreds of paperbacks at 50 cents each, covering a variety of topics, as well as fiction by leading novelists. Professor Anouar Majid returns to the Midcoast to speak about “The Gift of Tangier” on Tuesday, November 17, at 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. This event is free and open to all, presented by the Camden Conference, in anticipation of the 29th Annual Camden Conference on “The New Africa” coming up in February. Most folks have very personal reasons for giving to the Camden Public Library -- literacy education, cultural programs, great books. Perhaps you give so that your dad can bring his granddaughter to the interactive learning storyhours that you went to as a child, or so you can meet new friends and neighbors while learning about your local history. There's just a few weeks to go until “Giving Tuesday” on December 1, 2015. This is the official start of the giving season, so now is the perfect time to share why you’re pitching in this year. Snap an #UNselfie -- a picture of someone or something that represents your reason for giving, and share it on Instagram, Facebook, and/or Twitter with the hashtags #unselfie and #givingtuesday. Be sure to share how the picture represents why you give!
