“Discover History Month” Events Throughout October
The Camden Public Library will host a series of speakers and an exhibit during “Discover History Month.” Speakers will include architectural historian Chris Glass, Maine State Archivist Earle Shettleworth, best-selling author Kenneth Davis, our History Center director, Heather Moran, and more. In addition, the Camden-Rockport Historical Society and the Camden Public Library will co-host a display of vintage articles from the collection of the Historical Society. John and Rachel Nicholas Featured at the Library Coffeehouse October 1
John and Rachel Nicholas will return to the Camden Library Coffeehouse on Thursday, October 1, at 7:00 pm. $7 admission. Join us for great songwriting, harmonies, and a toe-tapping ensemble. David Dodson will join in with guitar and vocals, and Mike Nickerson will join the group on the standup bass, and occasionally on the harmonica. Click here for more information.
Giant Outdoor Book Sale Friday, October 2 through Sunday, October 4
It is time to start stacking up books to read for the coming winter! The place to find those books will be the giant autumn outdoor Camden Library Book Sale under the tent on the Library lawn on Friday, October 2, through Sunday, October 4. Three thousand books will be available for purchase from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, and from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday. Click here for more information.
Harbor Arts & Books Fair October 3 & 4
Harbor Arts and Books Fair continues the traditional fall arts festival in Camden. The Camden Public Library has long hosted the festival in its Amphitheatre and Harbor Park and is now in its 2nd year of management of the festival, with added flavor from a huge book sale. Harbor Arts and Books has possibly the most beautiful location for an art fair on the East Coast. The fair takes place in Camden’s historic Harbor Park and Amphitheatre. Over fifty exhibitors display their exquisite work in individual tents, while under the book tent the library will hold its traditional used book sale. The arts and crafts have been selected by a juried process so the quality is exceptional, varied, and delightful. Click here for more information.
“Simply Books!” October 3
Simply Books! is the library’s book group for adults, designed for book lovers. There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. We simply bring along whatever book we’re currently reading (usually the ones we’re loving and want to talk about!), and share it with the group. Click here for more information.
“Who is Africa?” Discussion Series Begins October 6
“Who is Africa?” discussion series will be hosted by the Camden Conference at the Camden Public Library, beginning on Tuesday, October 6, at 7:00 pm. What are the forces that have shaped and continue to affect the cultural, political, and economic landscape of Sub-Saharan Africa? Popular portrayals of Africa evoke images of Jungles, Dramatic Landscapes, Big Game, Blood Diamonds, Poverty, Famine and Genocide. Click here for more information.

“Camden and Rockport Revisited” October 8
To kick off Discover History Month, Heather Moran, author of “Camden and Rockport Revisited,” will give a gallery talk and book talk at the library on Thursday evening, October 8, at 7:00 pm. Moran is the director of the Library’s Walsh History Center and also currently the vice president of the Camden-Rockport Historical Society. The exhibit for the month will draw from the society’s collection of clothing from the 1840s to the 1960s. Click here for more information.
“How the Modern Documentary Can Shape the Public Mind” Class Begins October 9
The Coastal Senior College class, “How the Modern Documentary Can Shape the Public Mind,” begins on Friday, October 9, at 1:00 pm. The class meets weekly for six weeks, contact the Senior College to register, at 207-596-6906 or 800-286-1594. Click here for more information.

Philosophical Society Reading Group
October 13
The Camden Philosophical Society’s Reading Group hosts a monthly discussion session on the second Tuesday of the month. This month the group will meet on October 13 at 4:00 pm for a discussion of the work of contemporary British philosopher John Gray relating to “plural values” in modern society. The discussion of Gray’s ideas, including most specifically from his work Two Faces of Liberalism, will be moderated by Sarah Miller. All who enjoy a good discussion are welcome. Mystery History Photos October 13
Everyone loves a mystery – and we invite you to help solve some of them! Join the Camden Public Library, the Camden Rockport Historical Society, and the Maine Historical Society at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday evening, October 13, at 7:00 pm, as we spend an evening sorting through old photographs and historic objects in local collections that are missing some identifying details. We need your knowledge and memories to help us name people, places, and events. And you can bring your own mystery photos, too! The event is part of the library’s “Discover History” events. “How Bats are Doing in Maine” October 15
Midcoast Audubon Society hosts local bat enthusiast Annie Kassler with an update on “How Bats are Doing in Maine,” on Thursday, October 15, at 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. Bats are likely the most misunderstood and under-appreciated creature on the planet. Many people are surprised to learn that bats play an essential role in our planet’s ecology and global economy. In addition to why we should care about bats, Kassler will highlight myths v. facts, amazing bat skills, and display successful bat houses. She will also discuss White Nose Syndrome. “Kaspar Hauser” Performance October 18
Anthropos presents “Kaspar Hauser: The Open Secret of the Foundling Prince,” a one-person play written and performed by Glen Williamson, Sunday, October 18, at 2:00 pm in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library. In 1828 a fifteen-year-old boy appeared on the streets of Nuremberg, barely able to stand, walk, or speak, Locked in the dark – with no human contact – for most of his childhood, he had been born a prince . . . A journey through darkness to light, this story explores what it means to be human. There will be an admission charge. Click here for more information.
PopTech Exhibit Begins October 19
The Camden Public Library will host an exhibit by PopTech and NSquare entitled "Boldness and Opportunity." The exhibit is an interactive, museum-quality display that provides an amazing walk through the history of nuclear weapons, addressing how society will deal with the proliferation of these weapons today and tomorrow. The exhibit will be on display beginning Monday, October 19, through Saturday, October 24, in the Reading Room. Click here for more information.
