Maritime Month 2017!

April is our ninth annual Maritime Month here at the library! Join us all month for facinating, artistic, and fun events related to our maritime heritage. We will hear from schooner captains, photographers, historians, scientists, and poets. Whatever your connection to the sea, you are bound to find something that appeals to you here this month! Schooner Captains' Roundtable. Thursday, April 13, 7:00 pm.

Join local schooner captains for a lively night of stories, and perhaps a few tall tales. Captain Noah Barnes of the Schooner Stephen Taber, Captain Dennis Gallant of the Angelique, and Captain Garth Wells of the Schooner Lewis R. French will be joined by Dave Jackson, who has been to sea a time or two himself. Ask the questions you have always wondered about the sailing life, and get excited about the 2017 summer sailing season.

Grown Up Storytime. Fridays April 14, 21, & 28, 1:30 pm.

Join us on Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:00 to hear stories read by our fabulous team of librarians and occasional community members. Friday, April 21, Ken will be reading poetry. Friday, April 28, Dean Jorgenson will read from "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Tabletop Gaming for Ages 10 - 100. Fridays, April 14, 21, & 28, 3:00 pm.

All ages and experience levels of gamers welcome! Come play old favorites like chess, checkers, or Scrabble. Try something new like Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, or Ticket to Ride! Snacks welcome, please bring a game to share with the group.

The Library Will Be Closed on Sunday, April 16 & Monday, April 17.

In celebration of both Easter and Patriots' Day, the Library will be closed Sunday and Monday. You may still return your books in the book drop. We will see you on Tuesday! Have a wonderful holiday!

Songwriter Sessions. Tuesday, April 18, 6:00 pm.

Songwriters will meet again this winter on Tuesday evenings at the Camden Public Library History Center, in preparation for the June Library Coffeehouse. All are welcome! Come find a supportive group for your songwriting, all levels of songwriting are welcome. The sessions meet on THIRD Tuesdays, until the rehearsal on May 9 and the Coffeehouse on June 1. The sessions are 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Interpreting Maine's Coastal Geology with Steve Norton. Tuesday, April 18, 7:00 pm

Steve Norton will discuss the evolution of the bedrock geology that forms the underpinnings of the area, the glacial history that has reshaped our coastal area, and modern processes that influence human activity and vice versa. Steve Norton retired from the University of Maine in 2008, after 40 years of teaching and research. He researched in the field of aquatic geochemistry, with the interaction of water, humans, and geologic materials as his specialty. He continues his research at the University and is currently studying the chemistry of aluminum, iron, and phosphorus – how they interact and control biological productivity in Maine lakes. Curious Corvids with Midcoast Maine Audubon. Thursday, April 20, 7:00 pm

Local birder, photographer and Free Press columnist Don Reimer will celebrate members of the corvid family, which includes ravens, crows and jays. The corvid family contains some of Maine’s most intelligent and resourceful of birds. Illustrated by Don’s original photos, the talk will focus on corvids’ unique traits, life habits and intriguing behaviors.

Volunteers Needed For Amphitheatre Cleanup. Saturday, April 22, 9:00 am.

It's time for some springtime care in the Camden Amphitheatre and Harbor Park, and the Camden Public Library is looking for volunteers to take part in its annual Clean Up Day on Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join Parks Director Dave Jackson and help get the library grounds spruced up for the season. Participants are asked to bring their own rakes and gloves. For more information, contact the library at 236-3440.

Library Indoor Book Sale. Saturday & Sunday, April 22 & 23.

This sale will offer a large selection of hard cover and soft cover trade paperbacks at $2 each on a wide range of topics including the arts, biographies, cooking, fiction, foreign language, gardening, health, history, how to, Maine, marine, nature, religion, science, and sports. There will also be a large section of children’s books, hard covered books at $2 each; soft cover books at $1 each and board books at 50 cents each. Young adult books will be $2 each. There will be hundreds of paperbacks at 50 cents each, covering a variety of topics, as well as fiction by leading authors. DVDs and CDs will be $2 each and VHS tapes will be 50 cent each and include movies for all ages, cartoons for children, how too topics, music and books on tape. Volunteers are needed at the library at noon on Friday, April 21 to set out the books on tables in the Picker Room. Book sale chairperson Jean Freedman-White said, “We need people during the weekend to serve for three-hour shifts as cashiers and to refresh the tables of books during the sale. Volunteers are also needed to help pack up books at the end of the sale, on Monday, April 24 beginning at 9 a.m.” For information about volunteering for any phase of the book sale or for information on donating books, please call Freedman-White at 236-4885. All of the funds raised at the book sale will be used to purchase new books and for children and adult programs at the Camden Public Library.

Simply Books! Library Book Club. Saturday, April 22, 2:00 pm

Simply Books! is the library’s book group for adults. Simply Books! is a book group designed for book lovers. There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. We simply bring along whatever book we’re currently reading (usually the ones we’re loving and want to talk about!), and share it with the group. Simply Books! meetings are on the FOURTH Saturday of the month.

Lunch & Learn With Better Investments: Understanding ValueLine. Monday, April 24, 12:00 noon.

Part of Money Smart Week 2017, Pat Jones with Better Investments will be leading an information session on how to understand and utilize the ValueLine publication. The session takes place at noon on Monday, April 24. No experience in investing needed! All are welcome to come and learn, the class is free! Attendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch if they wish.

“Science on the Half-Shell” Cafe Sci With Bigelow Labs. Tuesday, April 25, 7:00 pm

The vast biodiversity of life on Earth harbors multitudes of as-yet undiscovered cures and remedies. Some are in the rainforest, while others could be hiding in the woods and estuaries of coastal Maine. Come find out where oyster parasites, chaga mushrooms, and molecular biology all come together in searching for benefits to human health.

Senior Research Scientist Dr. José Antonio Fernández-Robledo runs the Microbiology and Parasitology Laboratory on the Bigelow campus. His research represents the cutting edge of technology, unwrapping the mysteries and potential of parasites through genetic analysis and engineering. On April 25, he will present, “Science on the Half Shell: How Oyster Parasites Might Benefit Human Health.” Guests will learn about the vast genetic diversity of marine parasites, and why this could promise hope for medical science. Read and chat – entirely in Spanish! This Spanish language reading and conversation group will continue on second and fourth Tuesday meetings at 1:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. We’ll chat in Spanish about what we’re reading (books, magazines, etc.) and decide how to proceed. Bring ideas for future recommendations.

Poetry Reading with George Chappell. Wednesday, April 26, 1:00 pm.

Poet and creative writing teacher George Chappell will read from his new book of poetry in celebration of National Poetry Month. Mr. Chappell will once again be teaching his "Creative Writing for Veterans and Their Families" class this fall at the library. Classes will be held in the History Center on first and third Fridays, 9:30 to 11:00 am starting September 1.

Two Classic Tales of the Sea: Films & Discussion With The Camden Philosophical Society. Thursday, April 27, 6:30 pm

Two Classic Tales of The Sea, A Discussion: Moby Dick and The Old Man And The Sea. The Camden Philosophical Society will show parts of both films, and discuss. These are the stories of two men in conflict both struggling with their own monsters. In each case they experience a similar encounter. What is their struggle? Do we, in this modern era, still search for the same answers and to overcome the same conflicts?
