Anita Shreve will be at the Camden Public Library for a reading and discussion of her new book “The Stars are Fire” on May 2 at 7:00. Copies of the book will be available for sale courtesy of Owl & Turtle Bookshop, and there will be a chance to have Anita Shreve sign your book. The event will take place in the beautiful library Reading Room.

Forestry for Birds. Thursday, February 16, 7:00 pm

Sally Stockwell, Director of Conservation for Midcoast Maine Audubon, will speak about how Maine’s diverse forests are home to an amazing number of bird species. Each species uses different layers within the forest canopy, each prefers different forest types and food sources, and each has a slightly different preference for where they nest and raise their young. This multi-media presentation reviews the bird species of greatest conservation concern in Maine, the types of forest habitat and features they need to survive, and ways that woodlot owners can manage their forests “with birds in mind”.

Songwriter Sessions. Tuesday, February 21, 6:00 pm

Songwriters will meet again this winter on Tuesday evenings at the Camden Public Library History Center, in preparation for the June Library Coffeehouse. Come find a supportive group for your songwriting, all levels of songwriting are welcome. David Dodson, one of Camden's finest troubadours, will lead the session on February 21. The sessions meet on THIRD Tuesdays, until the rehearsal on May 9 and the Coffeehouse on June 1. The sessions are 6:00 to 8:00 pm. For more information, click here.

Craftswomen of the Midcoast: Suzanne Anderson. Tuesday, February 21, 7:00 pm

The Camden Public Library is pleased to announce a new series of presentations by the talented women who practice art and craft in the Midcoast region. The first speaker, Suzanne Anderson is the creator of YIKES! Studio Jewelry. YIKES! jewelry is produced in a variety of mediums including polymer clay, precious metal clay, enameling on copper and sterling silver sheet and wire. Tim Seymour and Daniel Quintanilla will show slides and film of their 100-mile August 2016 traverse of Wyoming’s Wind River Mountain Range. For Tim, it was a return to the mountains where he attended a semester course with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in 1982. There will be a question-and-answer session after the presentation.

Simply Books! Book Club. Saturday, February 25, 2:00 pm

Simply Books! is the library’s book group for adults. Simply Books! is a book group designed for book lovers. There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. We simply bring along whatever book we’re currently reading (usually the ones we’re loving and want to talk about!), and share it with the group. Simply Books! meetings are on the FOURTH Saturday of the month.

Book Talk with Artist Maureen Egan. Saturday, February 25, 4:00 pm

Rockport-based Maureen Egan is an artist, writer, and elder caregiver. She is fascinated by how humans adapt, regroup, and grow in adversity – especially in how creativity and openness influence the process. She has just completed a four-year book project called The Light from Here, a story that includes her art, and which chronicles her passage through anxiety, a breast cancer diagnosis, and healing. She will describe her artistic journey, including the steps in making the book, as well as read the opening pages of her story. The afternoon will include a book signing and sale of notecards of Maureen’s art.

Cafe Sci: The Crude Oil Buffet. Tuesday, February 28, 7:00 pm

Part of Bigelow Laboratory’s Café Sci series at the Camden Public Library. Fourth Tuesdays, February to May 2017. In April 2010, the Macondo well at the site of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded, causing uncontrollable fires that ultimately sank the rig and resulted in a massive off-shore oil spill at the site of the well. The well took months to seal during which time roughly 200 million gallons of crude oil were released into the ocean. While unprecedented efforts went into cleaning up and removing this oil, vast amounts washed up in coastal estuaries and on beaches or sank to the seafloor. In these places, microscopic organisms are important drivers of crude oil breakdown and removal.

Dr. Beth Orcutt, a Senior Research Scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, has been studying oil- and gas-eating microbes in the Gulf of Mexico for more than 15 years. On February 28, Orcutt will present “The All-you-can-eat Crude Oil Buffet: How Microscopic Life Eats Oil in the Ocean.” Guests will learn how important microbes are in the degradation of oil in the ocean and how lessons from the Gulf of Mexico apply to increasing commercial activity in the Arctic Ocean. “Dodson Fest” Begins! Thursday, March 2, 7:00 pm

Longtime Camden residents, siblings David Dodson and Anne Dodson will create a combination of events during March at the Camden Public Library. The “Dodson Fest” will include a concert, an art exhibit, and a book “re-release party.” The concert will be a combined performance of David Dodson and his band The Lowdown, with sister Anne Dodson and her “band,” Matt Szostak. Both groups have performed at the Camden Library Coffeehouse to the great enjoyment of the Coffeehouse audience. The Coffeehouse performance will be on Thursday evening, March 2, at 7:00 pm; admission is only $10.

The art exhibit in the Picker Room will perfectly complement the music at the Coffeehouse. During March, the Picker Room will feature a display of art work by the late Fred Dodson (David and Anne’s father). In addition to the Coffeehouse on March 2, there will be a gallery reception for the Dodsons on Saturday afternoon, March 4, at 2:00 pm. The event will also mark the re-release of Stony Brook RFD, a book about life in rural Vermont in the 1940s and 50s, written by the late Phyllis Dodson (Anne and David’s mother).
