WINTERFEST 2017 Begins With The Community Ice Carving Festival. February 4, 12:00 noon

This year there will be twelve teams of community ice carvers, with additional sculptures by master carver Tim Pierce. This event kicks off the week-long Winterfest 2017 celebration. Accompanied by music outdoors, and live music indoors, the carvers will complete dazzling crystalline sculptures on Saturday afternoon. There will be hot food available at the Amphitheatre, donated and prepared by volunteers, and kids’ crafts indoors. The radiant sculptures will last as long as winter weather continues, softening and glistening and changing from day to day. Ice sculpting is a wonderful outdoor activity in the winter; the chips literally fly as the blocks are transformed into sculpture. Teams return year after year to participate; returning teams include the Riley School, Artice, Team Thompson, Jim Reitz & Friends, MidCoast Interact Club, Station Maine, and the Children’s House Montessori School. The New Mainers. RESCHEDULED to February 5, 2:00 pm

Photographer Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest will exhibit a select collection of his photographs, “The New Mainers,” in the Picker Room throughout the month of February. There will be an opening reception and discussion with the artist on February 5 at 2:00. His exhibit will be a perfect accompaniment to the Camden Conference theme in 2017, “Refugees and Global Migration: Humanity’s Crisis.” Controversy aside, immigration is America’s oldest tradition, and along with religious tolerance, what our nation was built upon. The history of immigration in Maine is happening today, and is in constant flux. The exhibit and accompanying book, "New Mainers: Portraits of Our Immigrant Neighbors" highlights personal stories of immigration through contemporary portraits. For more information, click here.

Coffeehouse Featuring Martin Grosswendt & Susan Salem-Schatz. February 2, 7:00 pm

The Camden Public Library is pleased to present the duo Martin Grosswendt and Susanne Salem-Schatz for our February Coffeehouse. Admission is $10 at the door. Come beat the winter chill with some fabulously fun music. Music begins at 7:00, doors open at 6:30. Start with two compelling voices, an uncanny sense of harmony, and a deep grounding in traditional American music. Estate Planning. February 6, 1:00 pm

This workshop covers frequently asked questions and common misconceptions regarding wills and trusts, asset protection, nursing home issues, Medicaid qualifications and estate taxes. 95% of estate plans fail to accomplish their goals. This course offers a way to help you understand the misconceptions that lead to failure of estate plans, why and what can be done to fix them. Taught by Jesse Bifulco, estate planning attorney for over twenty years. This class will be part of an ongoing series, dates include: February 22, 12 noon; March 15, 12 noon; April 3, 3 pm; May 1, 3 pm; May 15, 12 noon; and June 5, 3 pm.

Join us at the Camden Public Library for a free showing of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe! Experience the adventures of Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter as they enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe. Once there, they discover a charming, once-peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts that has been turned into a world of eternal winter by the evil White Witch. Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers at Camden Opera House. February 8, 6:00 pm

The Camden Public Library is pleased to present Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers in their show "The Legend of the Banana Kid" as part of Winterfest 2017. Tickets are available at the Library, Family tickets are $15, single tickets $5, children under 5 are free. Tickets will also be available at the door. Little Chucky heads to the Wild West to outwit outlaws in this cowboy adventure! With a fistful of bananas, Chucky rides into town on his trusty goat for a showdown with Big Bad Bart and his gang of bandits. (*please note that there are no guns in the show). Book Talk with Artist Maureen Egan. February 11, 4:00 pm

Rockport-based Maureen Egan is an artist, writer, and elder caregiver. She is fascinated by how humans adapt, regroup, and grow in adversity – especially in how creativity and openness influence the process. She has just completed a four-year book project called The Light from Here, a story that includes her art, and which chronicles her passage through anxiety, a breast cancer diagnosis, and healing. She will describe her artistic journey, including the steps in making the book, as well as read the opening pages of her story. The afternoon will include a book signing and sale of notecards of Maureen’s art.

Camden-Rockport Historical Society, Harbour Mitchell. February 12, 2:00 pm

Harbour Mitchell will be speaking on his archaeological investigation of the Conway House homestead located on the Camden-Rockport Historical Society’s property in Rockport, Maine. His work has identified evidence of a 19th century occupation in the form of a kitchen midden, or dump, associated directly with 19th century occupation of the house. The midden includes, for example, food remains and ceramics, as well as personal items like buttons, buckles, beads, a lice comb, and an ivory toothbrush. The recoveries to date are consistent with the house’s occupation by Robert Thorndike, Jr., son of the first Rockport resident, circa 1807-1825. The Conway House excavations have also revealed possible evidence of an even earlier, possibly 18th century occupation. For more information, click here.

The Artist in the Garden. February 14, 10:00 am

Susan VanCampen, noted local artist, has been represented by galleries in the Midcoast, New York City, and elsewhere. Her watercolors, which are inspired by her own flower gardens in Thomaston, are stunning. This is part of the Winter Horticulture Series co-sponsored by the Camden Garden Club.

Arif’s curries combine spices from his Indian heritage with vegetables and herbs grown right here in Maine. On February 14, we’ll learn about Arif’s healthy obsession with food through his social and business entrepreneurship. Arif will demonstrate how he makes his authentic chai and teach us about spices, local Maine produce, and more. If we’re lucky, he might let us into his top secret curry club! Registration is required. There will be a light meal of vegetarian curry and chai. $5 per person.
