The Secret Life of Puffins. January 19, 7:00 pm

Getting started with new art materials can be costly, time consuming, and overwhelming! Wouldn’t it be better to try something before you buy all the supplies? As part of the Jumpstart January program, adults are welcome to come try out a variety of art media in a low-pressure, process art setting. Local artists will be on hand to contribute guidance. Simply Books! January 28, 2:00 pm

Simply Books! is the library’s book group for adults. Simply Books! is a book group designed for book lovers. There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. We simply bring along whatever book we’re currently reading (usually the ones we’re loving and want to talk about!), and share it with the group. Ice Carving Demonstration. January 29, 1:00 pm

Ice carving master Tim Pierce will demonstrate his skills to get carving teams warmed up for the Community Ice Carving Festival on February 4th. Spectators welcome! This event will be held in the library Children's Garden at the Atlantic Street entrance. For more information, click here.

The Architect in the Garden. January 31, 10:00 am

This event marks the start of the 2017 Winter Horticulture series. Landscape Architect Joshua Thompkins is located in Yarmouth but has done some significant projects in Camden and the Midcoast. He will discuss what drew him to his profession and how landscape architects can help homeowners with overall garden planning and installation. Co-Sponsored by the Camden Garden Club. Songwriter Sessions January 31, 6:00 pm

Songwriters will meet again this winter on Tuesday evenings at the Camden Public Library, in preparation for the June Library Coffeehouse. All are welcome! Come find a supportive group for your songwriting, all levels of songwriting are welcome. The first session will be January 31, and thereafter on THIRD Tuesdays, until the rehearsal on May 9 and the Coffeehouse on June 1. The sessions are 6:00 to 8:00 pm in the second floor meeting room. Ken Gross will participate as session leader with support from master songwriters David Dodson and John Nicholas. Call Ken for more information at the Library, 236-3440. “We are looking forward to a good time, sharing our writing and music,” said Gross. “We are also hoping for some cross-pollination, and getting some harmony and instrumental support for each other. In the past we have had all kinds of styles from traditional to singer-songwriter to rockabilly, novelty songs, Broadway, hymns, and humor. Wet Felting with Susie Cooke. January 31, 7:00pm

Susie Cooke will explain the the process of taking wool roving and creating a usable item using the resist method of wet felting. Merino wool will be used, preferred for its consistency and soft feel. There will be some embellishment materials available to include in the piece. Part of our annual Jumpstart January program. The New Mainers. February 1, 4:00 pm

Photographer Jan Pieter van Voorst van Beest will exhibit a select collection of his photographs, “The New Mainers,” in the Picker Room throughout the month of February. There will be an opening reception and discussion with the artist on February 1 at 4:00. His exhibit will be a perfect accompaniment to the Camden Conference theme in 2017, “Refugees and Global Migration: Humanity’s Crisis.” Controversy aside, immigration is America’s oldest tradition, and along with religious tolerance, what our nation was built upon. The history of immigration in Maine is happening today, and is in constant flux. The exhibit and accompanying book, "New Mainers: Portraits of Our Immigrant Neighbors" highlights personal stories of immigration through contemporary portraits. For more information, click here.

Coffeehouse Featuring Martin Grosswendt & Susan Salem-Schatz. February 2, 7:00 pm

The Camden Public Library is pleased to present the country blues duo Martin Grosswendt and Susanne Salem-Schatz for our February Coffeehouse. Admission is $10 at the door. Come beat the winter chill with some fabulously fun music. Music begins at 7:00, doors open at 6:30. Start with two compelling voices, an uncanny sense of harmony and a deep grounding in traditional American music. Add stunning guitar work and a warm, intimate performance style, and what do you get? Grown Up Story Hour. February 3, 1:30 pm

Bring your lunch or a snack, and listen to short stories read by our fabulous team of librarians, every Friday afternoon during the month of February. Community Ice Carving Festival. February 4, 12:00 noon

This year there will be twelve teams of community ice carvers, with additional sculptures by master carver Tim Pierce. This event kicks off the week long Winterfest 2017 celebration. Accompanied by music outdoors, and live music indoors, the carvers will complete dazzling crystalline sculptures on Saturday afternoon. There will be hot food available at the Amphitheatre, donated and prepared by volunteers, and kids’ crafts indoors. The radiant sculptures will last as long as winter weather continues, softening and glistening and changing from day to day. Ice sculpting is a wonderful outdoor activity in the winter; the chips literally fly as the blocks are transformed into sculpture. Teams return year after year to participate; returning teams include the Riley School, Artice, Team Thompson, Jim Reitz & Friends, MidCoast Interact Club, Station Maine, and the Children’s House Montessori School. The ice carving is sponsored in part by the Penobscot Bay Chamber of Commerce. For more information, click here.

AARP Tax Prep Assistance. February 6, 9:30 am (ongoing through April)

The Camden Public Library will once again host volunteer tax preparation assistance on most Monday mornings through early April. Advanced registration is required by calling the library at 236-3440. Space is very limited. For more information, click here.

Estate Planning. February 6, 1:00 pm

This workshop covers frequently asked questions and common misconceptions regarding wills and trusts, asset protection, nursing home issues, Medicaid qualifications and estate taxes. 95% of estate plans fail to accomplish their goals. This course offers a way to help you understand the misconceptions that lead to failure of estate plans, why and what can be done to fix them. Taught by Jesse Bifulco, estate planning attorney for over twenty years. This class will be part of an ongoing series, following dates include: February 22, 12 noon, March 15, 12 noon, April 3, 3 pm, May 1, 3 pm, May 15, 12 noon, and June 5, 3 pm. The Collector in the Garden. February 7, 10:00 am

Part of the Winter Horticulture Series co-sponsored by the Camden Garden Club. Craig Olsen on Artisan Books & Bindery on Islesboro deals in rare and special books. He will talk about how to collect books on gardening and gardens, and describe some of the collectible garden books that might be available. For more information, click here.

Reading Group of the Camden Philosophical Society. February 7, 4:00 pm

The Camden Philosophical society to continue its discussion of contemporary ethics focused on British philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre’s work "After Virtue: A Study in Moral Theory". Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe Family Movie Night. February 7, 6:00 pm

Join us at the Camden Public Library for a free showing of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe! Experience the adventures of Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter as they enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe. Once there, they discover a charming, once-peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts that has been turned into a world of eternal winter by the evil White Witch. Aided by the magnificent lion Aslan, the children lead Narnia into a battle to be free of the Witch’s glacial powers forever! This event is part of Winterfest 2017! Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers Puppet Show at Camden Opera House. February 8, 6:00 pm

The Camden Public Library is pleased to present Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers in their show "The Legend of the Banana Kid" as part of Winterfest 2017. Tickets are available at the Library, Family $15, single tickets $5, children under 5 are free. Tickets will also be available at the door. Little Chucky heads to the Wild West to outwit outlaws in this cowboy adventure! With a fistful of bananas, Chucky rides into town on his trusty goat for a showdown with Big Bad Bart and his gang of bandits. (*please note that there are no guns in the show).
