“Clarity” Opening Reception December 8, 6:00 pm
Clarity is the two-person art team of Robert and Su.Sane Hake, who return to the library with another dazzling exhibit during the month of December. “Temper Tantrum, A 20/20 Vision,” is “a show to heal our time.” The show is a retrospective of the team’s work, gathering together thirty years of collaborative work, and creating a “pattern tapestry of transmutation for our time.” Join artists Robert and Su.Sane Hake for a gala opening reception in the Jean Picker Room Gallery on Thursday, December 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Mood Foods - Destination Wellness: December 12, 12:00 pm
This month’s Destination Wellness speaker is Kerry Altiero, owner of Café Miranda, speaking on “Mood Foods” on Monday, December 12, at 12:00 noon. Remember the movie, “Like Water for Chocolate?”, where the New York Times said, “emotions so strong you can taste them?” They weren’t entirely wrong. Foods do evoke emotions by directly affecting neurotransmitter function. Well, enough of the science part. Let’s talk about the food part. Come and hear well-known chef and local restaurateur, Kerry Altiero, tell us all about foods — foods that make us happy, foods that make us sad, or even mad. Reading Group of the Camden Philosophical Society: December 13, 4:00 pm
The Camden Philosophical Society will meet on Tuesday, December 13, to continue a discussion of Thomas Kuhn’s concept of paradigm change. The discussion will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the Picker Room. All are welcome. In The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kuhn argues that such revolutions involve a change of paradigm. He illustrates his claim primarily with examples drawn from physics, but it applies equally well to other sciences, such as biology, chemistry, astronomy, and even the social sciences. Dr. Éthelle Lord will speak on Tuesday, December 13, at 7:00 pm on “Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care.” Lord points out the immediate need for a system approach in dementia care today — one that includes the family care provider, an Alzheimer’s coach at the hub of the healthcare wheel, and the need for a standard in dementia care training. Clarity, the artist/writer team of Su.Sane and Robert Hake, will offer an uplifting antidote to the frenzy of the holiday season when they present “Discovering Creativity and Sacred Space in Our Everyday Lives,” on Wednesday, December 14, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm at Camden Public Library. The free program is part of Quarry Hill’s Adventures in Living Well series for adults age 50 and better and is co-sponsored by the library. Taking as a starting point their belief that creativity belongs to everyone, not just to those who consider themselves artists, the Hakes will explain how to find creativity and sacred space in the ordinary and in so doing add depth and richness to everyday life. First Time Homebuyers: December 15, 7:00 pm
Join Midcoast-based realtor Monet Brazier, a "Millennial" with The Maine Real Estate Network on Thursday, December 15, at 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. She will help explain the home-buying process in ‘plain English’ alongside a local loan officer to better connect our community and to provide resources on how to approach buying real estate in our area. “If you’ve never bought a home, or would like to know what it’s like to buy a home in today’s market — this class is for you!” says Monet.

Still wrapping your gifts in newspaper? Taping got you stuck? Ribbon tying you up in knots? We can help. The Camden Public Library will host a drop-in wrapping instructional event on Friday, December 16, from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Come and go as you please during the session. Come learn new wrapping techniques, ribbon tying, and paper stamping to get you started on your holiday season. Bring a few packages of any size or shape, and some favorite paper if you wish. Taking Falafel to a Fourth of July Picnic: December 20, 7:00 pm
The Camden Conference will host speaker Reza Jalali at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday evening, December 20, at 7:00 pm. Jalali, a writer and an educator, will share his experience of arriving in Portland, Maine, as a refugee. It is the universal story of a wide-eyed refugee coming to Maine, the country’s whitest state, awed by the sights and sounds of a new country, and shocked by the cultural differences he experiences in the U.S. He was determined to begin a new life to replace the one lost to a revolution and a war in his country of birth, Iran. Holiday Hours
The Library will be closing at 3:00 pm on December 24, and will be closed on Christmas Day. We will be open on New Year's Eve until 5:00 pm (December 31) and closed on New Years Day. Happy New Year to you!
