MWPA (Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance) will host a “Write-In” at the Camden Public Library on Saturday, October 1, in the Reading Room, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Lucy Stone, An Unapologetic Life by Sally G. McMillen October 4, 7:00 pm
Lucy Stone, a nineteenth-century abolitionist and suffragist, was one of the most famous women in America in the 1850s. She was a brilliant orator, played a leading role in organizing and participating in national women’s rights conventions, served as president of the American Equal Rights Association, co-founded and helped lead the American Woman Suffrage Association, and founded and edited the Woman’s Journal, the most enduring, influential women’s newspaper of its day. Sally McMillen, author of Lucy Stone, An Unapologetic Life, will give a talk on Lucy Stone and how Stone’s experiences reflected larger events taking place during a vibrant period in American history. Elders Protection: Fighting Scams October 6, 2:oo pm
Two experts with Maine’s Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection and Legal Services for the Elderly will give a presentation at the Camden Public Library on Thursday, October 6, at 2:00 pm. They will address various elder financial protection topics and how to recognize and fight scams. Meegan Burbank is a staff attorney at Legal Services for the Elderly and will co-present with David M. Leach, MPA, Principal Consumer Credit Examiner.
They will cover financial protection topics and distribute two guides co-authored by Leach: "Downeaster Common Sense Guide: Gone Phishing" (State of Maine’s anti-scam guide); and "Downeaster Guide to Elder Financial Protection" (contains popular resource hotline numbers such as Do Not Call, Do Not Mail, Credit Card Opt-Out, and state, federal and non-profit agency contact information). Will Brown with Special Guest Cindy Kallet at Library Coffeehouse October 6, 7:00 pm
Two of the area’s favorite musicians, Will Brown and Cindy Kallet, will be performing at the Library Coffeehouse on Thursday, October 6, at 7:00 pm. Will Brown has played in the coastal Maine area with many popular musical groups for the past 35 years, and is known for his finger style guitar accompaniments, great harmonies, and arrangements of songs new and old. He will perform the first half of the evening as solo songs, “with a little peppering of recitation,” he adds. He will be joined for a number of songs by Cindy Kallet for songs they have worked on together over the years. Cindy Kallet is known for her years in midcoast Maine as a songwriter, singer, and guitarist who has taught and performed extensively throughout North America in coffeehouses, concert halls, house concerts and music camps.

Senior College Class on Maine’s Marine Wilderness Begins October 7
Coastal Senior College will offer “Maine’s Marine Wilderness: Exploring Maine’s Offshore Fishing Grounds” on Fridays, October 7 through November 18, 1:30-3:30 pm, at the Camden Public Library. The class will examine the historical ecology, environment, and fisheries of 80 marine fishing grounds off the Maine Coast from waters off Frenchmans Bay to those off Muscongus Bay. Arborist Dominic Fontaine will present “Living with Trees in the Urban Community,” a talk and slideshow, on Saturday, October 8, at 2:00 pm. Fontaine is a licensed arborist who has been practicing tree preservation since 1996. Native to Camden, he has partaken in the most extreme tree care and removal operations along the Maine coast and in Boston. Reading Group of the Camden Philosophical Society October 11, 4:00 pm
The Camden Philosophical Society will, on Tuesday, October 11, discuss the central concepts of the book Being and Event by contemporary French philosopher Alain Badiou. The portions of the book to be read and discussed will provide a segue from the Crisis of Modernity theme, which has characterized the group’s readings over the last year or more, to a focus on philosophy relating to science, technology, and other contemporary topics for its readings over much of the coming winter. Matthew Edny, Osher Professor in the History of Cartography, will visit the Camden Public Library during History Month to talk about John Smith’s 1637 Map of New England and the Osher Map Library. The Map Library is an extraordinary resource that has a collection of historical maps. As an integral part of the University of Maine System, the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education [OML] is committed to preserving the cartographic heritage of the state, region, and nation. “The Forgotten War” Photography Exhibit in October
There will be a photography display in the Picker Room during History Month entitled “The Forgotten War: My Dad’s Perspective,” featuring photos from the Korean War taken by Galen Leavitt. Writing instructor and creativity coach Teresa Piccari will offer a free Creative Writing class at the Camden Public Library on Monday, October 17, from 9:30 to 11:00 am. The session will focus on developing strong characters capable of evoking reader likability and empathy, who undergo a character arc that illustrates the human condition as they evolve.
