The Pacific Crest Trail June 23, 7:00 pm
In 2010 Anne O’Regan left her home in Boston and traveled west to make a trek that fewer than 300 people accomplish each year. Starting in Campo, California, on the Mexican border, she backpacked north for 2,650 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Traveling through California, Oregon, and Washington, she completed her thru-hike five months later in Manning Park, Canada. Join us as Anne shares tales from the trail, and offers a unique visual presentation gleaned from over 3,000 photographs taken along the way. June Artist of the Month Rose Emma Samson
Rose Emma Samson was born in 1926 but began painting seriously in her fifties after retiring from the real estate field, and has concentrated on abstract painting since 2005. Now in her late eighties and still in the studio every day, she paints with the vigor of a much younger person and the surety of a seasoned professional. Rose’s work is a mixture of spontaneity and color combinations. Her designs have a wonderful sense of balance, energy, and vitality. The textures and blending of colors are reminiscent of her early exposure to a large variety of fabrics and decorating. An exhibit of selected works will be on display though June. Tours Begin June 24, 4:00 pm
The Camden Public Library and the Camden Area Business Group will again host free walking tours of downtown Camden every Friday at 4:00 pm, June 24 through September 9. The tours begin on Atlantic Avenue at the Children’s Garden of the library and end at the Opera House. Film “Singularity or Bust” June 28, 7:00 pm
The Camden Philosophical Society will continue its 2016 Film, Lecture, and Discussion Series with “Singularity or Bust” by Raj Dye on Tuesday, June 28, at 7:00 pm in the Picker Room. This event is free and open to the public. Film-maker and former Artificial Intelligence programmer Raj Dye followed futurist AI researchers Ben Goertzel and Hugo DeGaris around Hong Kong and Xiamen, documenting their doings, gathering their perspectives, and creating “a uniquely edgy, experimental Singularitarian road movie.”.
“Ekphrastic Prose and Poetry” June 30,

Laurie Murray will present “Ekphrastic Prose and Poetry” on Thursday evening, June 30, at 7:00 pm. Ekphrastic prose is writing that is inspired from a visual work of art, be it a painting, photography, or sculpture. The use of sensory details and metaphors in this type of reflective writing often provides a visceral experience for the reader and is reflective in nature. Ekphrastic poetry has been in existence since the Romantic era. Recently there has been a resurgence of ekphrastic writing, moving it into creative writing, especially creative nonfiction. Murray’s lecture will include a discussion of this literary art form and its history before sharing a few poems from Marilyn Chandler McEntyre’s book In Quiet Light: Poems on Vermeer’s Women. She will end the talk with the reading of her essay, “Maidenhair.” Click here for more information..
2016 Midcoast Mini Maker Faire Call for Makers!
Camden’s Midcoast Mini Maker Faire is a hands-on festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness. We would love to hear about an activity you would like to share with the community. The 4th annual Midcoast Mini Maker Faire will be held Saturday, September 10, at the Camden Public Library from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Past Faires have attracted about 900 people each year, including local community members and visitors to the midcoast. Many of these visitors are families with elementary or middle-school aged children. This year we plan to host workshops to increase the adult participation as well as feature DIY projects targeted to adult makers. Camden Rotary “Music by the Sea” – 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Camden Harbor Park & Amphitheatre. Opening Reception July 5
Fabric Artist Linda Shepard will return to the Camden Public Library with “Animal Alchemy,” a wonderful exhibit of colorful, vibrant quilt art throughout July. The quilts feature bold designs making use of the fabric’s color, texture, and patterns, and usually portraying colorful creatures from the animal kingdom. Summer Reading Program for Adults Begins July 5!
The library will again offer a Summer Reading Program for Adults! The program has proved very popular in past summers and encourages readers to stretch their usual categories and read some challenging, interesting, and popular books this summer. We will use the Bingo card format, with frames to be filled according to what book you are reading. Prizes will include (of course) a selection of new books, and more! The best part of the Summer Reading Program is the Readers Response Bulletin Board, where you can write and read reports from others who are participating in the program. After July 4, stop by the Circulation Desk and pick up a Summer Reading Program bingo card!
And parents, don't forget the summer reading program for kids! Sign up any time, the program begins July 7 and will meet on Thursdays for six weeks. The next Midcoast Stroke Support Group meeting will be on Wednesday, July 6, at 10:00 am. Novel Jazz Septet Celebrates Jazz July 7,

The Novel Jazz Septet returns to the Camden Amphitheatre on July 7 at 7:00 pm to feature the swinging music of the great American jazz composers, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn in a free concert. The band performs well-known compositions plus vintage gems recently unearthed from original scores at the Smithsonian and re-interpreted for you at the Camden Amphitheatre. Monday Movies Series Kicks Off July 11
The Camden Public Library will host another series of Monday Movies in the Amphitheatre, beginning with “The Spiderwick Chronicles” (2008, 1 hr 36 min, PG) on July 11 at dusk (8:30 pm). The theme of the movie series this summer is “Books to Movies.” “The Spiderwick Chronicles” is a series of children’s books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. They chronicle the adventures of the Grace children, twins Simon and Jared and their older sister Mallory, after they move into the Spiderwick Estate and discover a world of fairies that they never knew existed. The Camden Shakespeare Festival announces its 2016 season with the magic of The Tempest, while two sets of identical twins create hilarious havoc in The Comedy of Errors.
