“Weathering Shame” November 12

Weathering Shame, by one of Maine’s leading weathermen, WCSH 6 News Center’s Kevin Mannix and his social worker wife Linda Rota, is a personal journey of shame and stigma penned by two respected professionals. The authors will speak at the Camden Public Library on Thursday, November 12, at 7:00 pm. In Weathering Shame, the authors’ goals are for readers to benefit from their struggles, be inspired and encouraged by their stories, and encourage embarking on a journey of self-discovery, recovery, or awareness. Click here for more information..

Get Started on Your Career Plan November 12

Who do you see when you look in the mirror? Your career choices are a reflection of where you’ve been, what you know, and where you want to go. New Ventures Maine (formerly Maine Center for Women, Work, and Community) will offer a free workshop on career planning on Thursday, November 12, 7:00-8:30 pm in the History Center Meeting Room. This workshop will help point you in the right direction. You will identify your unique career interest code, review what to consider when making a career choice, and learn about local training options (including possible funding) that will increase your employability, job satisfaction, and earning potential. Indoor Book Sale November 14 & 15

It is time to stock up on books to read by the fireplace or in a warm bed during the coming winter! And the Camden Public Library’s November 14-15 book sale in the Picker Room is the place to find those books. Sale hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday and 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Sunday. This will be the last book sale until next spring! Current fiction in hardcover and quality softcover will be priced at $2 each. There will be a great number of books on a variety of topics including the arts, biographies, cooking, foreign language, gardening, health, history, government, Maine, marine, nature, religion, science, sports, and travel! There will also be a large selection of children’s books priced at $1 and young adult books at $2 each. There will be hundreds of paperbacks at 50 cents each, covering a variety of topics, as well as fiction by leading novelists. Click here for more information..

Medicare Session November 17

Lilly Filippi of United Healthcare will give a free presentation covering Medicare basics, with parts A, B, C and D, and answering all questions. The sessions will be repeated every Tuesday morning, 10:00 to 11:30 am, in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library, through November 17..

“The Gift of Tangier” November 17

Professor Anouar Majid returns to the Midcoast to speak about “The Gift of Tangier” on Tuesday, November 17, at 7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. This event is free and open to all, presented by the Camden Conference, in anticipation of the 29th Annual Camden Conference on “The New Africa” coming up in February. Born in Tangier, Morocco, Anouar Majid is the author of five critically acclaimed books on Islam and the West. Click here for more information..

“Rare Birds of Maine” November 19

Louis Bevier, Maine ornithologist and advanced bird identifier, will present a program on Rare Birds of Maine on Thursday, November 19, at 7:00 pm. Bevier will be hosted by the Midcoast Audubon Society. Bevier was the subspecies editor in the Birds of North America series produced by the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. He does environmental consulting work and leads a few bird tours for the Field Guides company each year..

“Effective Altruism” November 24

Effective altruism is a growing social movement founded on the desire to make the world as good a place as it can be, using evidence and reason to find out how to do so, and having the audacity to actually try. Camden native Kyle Scott, who has worked for the Centre for Effective Altruism in Oxford, England, will speak on effective altruism on Tuesday, November 24, at 7:00 pm. Click here for more information..

War and Reconciliation: Africa’s Dilemma December 1

The establishment of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a pioneering international event. Never had any country sought to move forward from despotism to democracy both by exposing the atrocities committed in the past and achieving reconciliation with its former oppressors. What were the goals? Take an UNselfie and Share Why You Give to Help Kids Learn to Read!

Most folks have very personal reasons for giving to the Camden Public Library -- literacy education, cultural programs, great books. Perhaps you give so that your dad can bring his granddaughter to the interactive learning storyhours that you went to as a child, or so you can meet new friends and neighbors while learning about your local history. There are just a few days to go until “Giving Tuesday” on December 1, 2015. This is the official start of the giving season, so now is the perfect time to share why you’re pitching in this year. Snap an #UNselfie -- a picture of someone or something that represents your reason for giving, and share it on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter with the hashtags #unselfie and #givingtuesday. Be sure to share how the picture represents why you give!
You can also share a pic of a simple sign that says “I’m giving because” and your reason for giving this season. Fellow fans might just get inspired to share their story and contribute, too.
