“How Bats are Doing in Maine” October 15

Midcoast Audubon Society hosts local bat enthusiast Annie Kassler with an update on “How Bats are Doing in Maine,” on Thursday, October 15, at  7:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. Many people are surprised to learn that bats play an essential role in our planet’s ecology and global economy. In addition to why we should care about bats, Kassler will highlight myths vs facts, amazing bat skills, and display successful bat houses. “Kaspar Hauser” Performance October 18

The Midcoast Anthroposophical Society presents “Kaspar Hauser: The Open Secret of the Foundling Prince,” a one-person play written and performed by Glen Williamson, Sunday, October 18, at 2:00 pm in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library. In 1828, a fifteen-year-old boy appeared on the streets of Nuremberg, barely able to stand, walk, or speak. Locked in the dark – with no human contact – for most of his childhood, he had been born a prince . . . A journey through darkness to light, this story explores what it means to be human. There will be an admission charge. Click here for more information..

PopTech Exhibit Begins October 19

The Camden Public Library will host an exhibit by PopTech and NSquare entitled “Boldness and Opportunity.” The exhibit is an interactive, museum-quality display that provides an amazing walk through the history of nuclear weapons, addressing how society will deal with the proliferation of these weapons today and tomorrow. The exhibit will be on display beginning Monday, October 19, through Saturday, October 24, in the Reading Room. Click here for more information..

An Empty Place at the Table October 19

New Hope for Women will host their annual display, “An Empty Place at the Table,” on Monday, October 19 at the Camden Public Library. The display is a poignant memorial to victims of domestic violence in the midcoast area. New Hope for Women offers support to people in Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, and Waldo Counties affected by domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking, and provides educational resources to assist our communities in creating a safer and healthier future..

Tuesday Medicare Sessions Begin 
October 20

Lilly Filippi of United Healthcare will present Medicare basics, including parts A, B, C and D, and will answer all questions. The sessions will be on Tuesday mornings, 10:00 to 11:30 am, in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library, from October 20 to November 17..

Tech Tuesday: Basics of Personal Cloud Storage October 20

Please join us for this free technology class on Tuesday, October 20, at 3:00 pm, as part of the monthly Tech Tuesday Series. Please call 236-3440 to sign up. “Basics of Personal Cloud Storage and File Sharing” will introduce the concept of storing documents “in the cloud” as well as sharing files. We all accumulate more and more data on our personal computers. Should I buy a new hard drive? Should I sort through thousands of photos? Cloud Storage is a way to store your data on a remote, third party computer via an internet connection. We will discuss several free services available for storing and sharing files. “The Maine Home Front in World War I” October 20

Maine State Historian Earle Shettleworth will visit the Camden Public Library as part of “Discover History Month” to present a new lecture on “The Maine Home Front in World War I,” on Tuesday evening, October 20, at 7:00 pm. Looking to the 100th anniversary of America’s entering World War I in 2017, Shettleworth has been developing a lecture based largely on real photo postcards that tell the story of Maine and World War I. Click here for more information..

Senior College Class on Frances Perkins Begins October 21

“The Life and Legacy of Frances Perkins” will meet for five Wednesdays beginning October 21. Frances Perkins, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor, is acknowledged as the woman behind the New Deal, the woman who created Social Security, the minimum wage, unemployment insurance, the 40-hour work week, the limits on child labor, and the modern middle class. The class will meet noon to 2:00 pm on October 21, 28; November 4, 18; and December 2. Camden Conference Hosts Nano Chatfield October 22

Nano Chatfield will speak about “Girls Education in Tanzania” on Thursday, October 22, at 7:00 pm. This event is free and open to all. Nano Chatfield has volunteered extensively in northern Tanzania for the past 10 years. “Creative Process” Workshop October 25 and October 27

“Creative Process: Exploring Your Artistry” will be offered at the library by Teresa Piccari and is open to writers and artists of all genres. This two-hour workshop will be repeated twice: on Sunday afternoon, October 25, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, and on Tuesday evening, October 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. “The Evolution of the Labyrinth” with Chris Glass October 27

The Camden Philosophical Society will host a talk by Chris Glass, entitled “The Evolution of the Labyrinth,” to take place at the Camden Public Library on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00 pm. All are welcome. Camden architect Christopher Glass  will explore the history of the labyrinth, from its occurrences in prehistory to its resurgence in recent years as a place for spiritual practices. This lecture is based on a course given last spring at the Senior College in Belfast. Click here for more information.

Author Kenneth Davis October 29

Best-selling author Kenneth Davis will visit the Camden Public Library as part of “Discover History Month” on Thursday evening, October 29, at 7:00 pm. Davis will be talking about his latest book, The Hidden History of America at War: Untold Tales from Yorktown to Fallujah, just published in May. Davis is also the author of Don’t Know Much About History, which spent 35 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and gave rise to the “Don’t Know Much About” series of books and audios. Click here for more information..

Pumpkin Palooza! October 29

Bring your pumpkin to the Amphitheatre or drop it off during the day in the Children’s Garden with your name on it. We'll be showing off all the jack-o’-lanterns at 7:00 pm! All ages and carving talents welcome and encouraged to participate. This is a great event for kids, families, adults, and teens, so get carving and let’s see how many pumpkins we can get in the Amphitheatre on the steps all lit up! Let’s go for a record number! This is a great way for more people to enjoy your jack-o’-lantern! Simply Books! October 31

Simply Books! is the library’s book group for adults, designed for book lovers. There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. We simply bring along whatever book we’re currently reading and share it with the group.  Simply Books! meetings are usually on the fourth Saturday of the month, but this month the group will meet on Saturday, October 31, at 2:00 pm. There will be no meeting in November, and the December meeting will be on December 5. The schedule will be back to normal on the fourth Saturday of January (January 23). Click here for more information..

Library Coffeehouse Features Meteora November 5 

The Camden Library Coffeehouse continues its series of fine and exciting music concerts with musicians from near and far. Meteora will be the featured band on Thursday, November 5, at 7:00 pm. Meteora performs an eclectic array of original songs and folk ballads, as well as traditional tunes, songs, and original arrangements.
