“The Value of a High School Education” November 10, 7:00 pm

The library will host a forum, “Beyond AP: Rediscovering the Value of a High School Education,” on Thursday, November 10, at 7:00 pm, presented by a panel of Maine educators. This is an open forum and discussion, led by educators including the Maine Principal of the Year Derek Pierce, from Casco Bay High school in Portland; Will Galloway, who serves as the Head of School at Watershed School located in downtown Camden; and Jude Masseur, Ellsworth High School Alternative Education director. Click here for more information..

This month’s Destination Wellness speakers are Rhonda Nordstrom and Kasey Blood, Licensed Aestheticians at Rheal Day Spa, speaking on “Enhance Your Natural Look for the Holidays,” at 12:00 noon on Monday, November 14. “Why being neighborly is more important now than ever” November 15, 7:00 pm

The Camden Conference will host speaker Tae Chong on “Why being neighborly is more important now than ever,” on how Maine’s emerging markets and emerging workforce depends on people from “away.” Tae has over twenty years experience working with the immigrant and refugee populations in Maine. He has worked with this population as an educator, advocate, policy maker, social service provider, and now as a business advisor. Birding in Cambodia November 17, 7:00 pm

Howie Nielsen will present “Bird Life and Conservation in the Kingdom of Cambodia” on Thursday, November 17, at 7:00 pm, as part of the Midcoast Audubon Society’s series. Come to the program and see camera-trapping of new species for this area of Southest Asia, and coastal survey work for conservation of endangered species. Dr. Nielsen developed an eco-tourism program in Cambodia, having worked there each year since 2006. Click here for more information..

Simply Books! is the library’s book group for adults, designed for book lovers. There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. Medicare and Medicaid Information November 21 and 28, 10:00 am

You are invited to a no-pressure, informative community presentation to learn all about Medicare, get answers to all of your questions, and learn about the benefits of a plan from United Healthcare. Bring neighbors, and bring your questions! The purpose of the meetings is to inform and educate the attendees about their choices when becoming a Medicare member, and to answer questions, specifically about Medicare Advantage Plans with United Healthcare; enrollments will not be taken at the meetings. The sessions will be repeated on two Mondays, November 21 and 28. Click here for more information..

Read and chat – entirely in Spanish! This Spanish language reading and conversation group meets second and fourth Tuesdays  at 1:00 pm at the Camden Public Library. The group will chat in Spanish about what they’re reading, etc. Click here for more information..

Gallery Talk on Imero Gobbato November 22, 7:00 pm

The library is hosting an exhibit of the work of Imero Gobbato, “A Place Called Humbravana,” during the month of November. A repeat presentation of “An Introduction to Humbravana” will be offered by Gobbato’s friend and studio assistant, Rose Willson, on Tuesday, November 22, at 7:00 pm. By popular request, the slide talk will be a repeat of the talk presented earlier in the month, which was attended by a standing-room-only audience. The presentation will include an illustrated biography of Gobbato and a performance of a “Humbravanian” song by Rachel and John Nicholas.
     Originally from Italy, Imero Gobbato was an imaginative, talented, and prolific artist who lived and worked in Camden for many years. All his life he created paintings, drawings, prints, carvings, boats, models, and music. He is best known for his light-filled paintings, reflecting his love of the rocky shores of Mid-Coast Maine. Click here for more information.

CLOSED November 24

The library will be closed on Thursday, November 24, for Thanksgiving. We will be open for our normal business hours on Friday, November 25 (9:00 am to 6:00 pm). Have a great Thanksgiving!.

Geshe Gehlek November 27

Tibetan Buddhist master Geshe Gehlek will give a talk on “Awakening Compassion” on Sunday, November 27, at 2:00 pm. The free talk will be hosted by the Rockland Shambhala Meditation Center. Geshe Gehlek will speak about the Buddhist path of liberation and will share experiences and insights on the innate suffering of humanity, as well as the Buddha’s teachings on compassion and freedom from suffering. Through his talk and the discussion to follow, Geshe Gehlek will engage the community in a timely dialogue about how compassion -- understanding suffering and taking action to relieve it -- can truly shift our world. Click here for more information..
