Library Seeks Events Coordinator
The Camden Public Library has an opening for an Events Coordinator. The position is a terrific opportunity to engage with and support every aspect of community life. “The Events Coordinator position is an amazing opportunity for the right person,” said Ken Gross, Assistant Director. “I have been coordinating events for almost twelve years now,” he added, “and while I am moving on to new challenges in the History Center at the library, we are looking for fresh ideas so we can continue our popular evening and weekend programs.” The Library is looking for just the right person to plan and implement Library events and programs that both stimulate the imagination and satisfy the needs of life-long learners. In addition to planning, scheduling, and implementing these programs, the Events Coordinator also publicizes them via the e-newsletter, social media, press releases, signage, website, etc. The job is part-time at 25 hours per week, and the schedule requires two evenings a week as well as occasional weekend work. John Smith’s 1637 Map and the Osher Map Library October 13, 7:00 pm
Matthew Edney, Osher Professor in the History of Cartography, will give an illustrated talk on John Smith’s 1637 Map of New England and the Osher Map Library on Thursday, October 13, at 7:00 pm. As an integral part of the University of Maine System, the Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education is committed to preserving the cartographic heritage of the state, region, and nation. The John Smith map was published in England in 1637 and is entitled, “New England the most remarqueable parts thus named by the high and mighty Prince Charles, nowe King of great Britaine.” Click here for more information..
“The Forgotten War” Photography Exhibit Reception October 15, 2:00 pm
There will be a photography display in the Picker Room during History Month entitled “The Forgotten War: My Dad’s Perspective,” featuring photos from the Korean War taken by Galen Leavitt. The photos are from the collection of Margo Ann Leavitt Pullen and will be on display throughout October. Pullen will host a reception and gallery talk on Saturday afternoon, October 15, at 2:00 pm. Upcoming: Creative Writing Class October 17, 9:30 am
Writing instructor and creativity coach Teresa Piccari will offer a free Creative Writing class at the Camden Public Library on Monday, October 17, from 9:30 to 11:00 am. The session will focus on developing strong characters, capable of evoking reader likability and empathy, who undergo a character arc that illustrates the human condition as they evolve. “Are You Present?” October 17, 12:00 noon
This month’s Destination Wellness speaker is Greg Smith, speaking on Presence in Healing on Monday, October 17, at 12:00 noon. What is life? What is consciousness? Can we truly heal ourselves? What does health mean? Smith will elucidate on these questions and more in his talk, “Are You Present?” Join us to broaden your view of health and wellness by learning about PIH: Presence in Healing. Empty Place at the Table October 18
Empty Place at the Table is a display honoring members of our community who have died due to domestic violence. New Hope for Women will present the daylong memorial in the Camden Public Library on Tuesday, October 18. Four women and one infant are remembered at the table with items donated by their families, along with an additional place setting to honor all victims of domestic homicide. The Syrian Refugee Crisis October 18, 7:00 pm
As part of the Camden Conference series on Refugees and Global Migration, Harborside resident Kel House will offer a presentation, “Up Close and Personal: A View of the Syrian Refugee Crisis from a Small Greek island and What we here in Maine can do to Help,” on Tuesday, October 18, at 7:00 pm. Kel House and his wife Sher spend part of each year on the small Greek island of Symi, which is about the size and population of Deer Isle, and is very close to the coast of Turkey. Like other islands along Europe’s Mediterranean coast, Symi Island has been receiving a stream of dangerously overloaded boats full of Syrian and other refugees on its shores. “Exploring Jewish Prayer” Senior College Class Begins October 20
The Coastal Senior College will offer “Man’s Quest for God: Exploring Jewish Prayer” on Thursdays, October 20 through November 17, 12:00-2:00 pm, hosted by the Camden Public Library. The class will be led by instructor Steve Shaw. The class will examine how the sages of the Talmud gradually crafted a liturgy of praise, petition, and yearning; discuss its underlying theology; and explore fundamental questions such as whether a non-believer can pray. Medicare and Medicaid Information October 24, 10:00 am
You are invited to a fun, no-pressure, and informative community presentation to learn all about Medicare, get answers to all of your questions, and learn about the benefits of a plan from United Healthcare. Bring neighbors, and bring your questions! The purpose of the meetings is to inform and educate the attendees about their choices when becoming a Medicare member, and to answer questions, specifically about Medicare Advantage Plans with United Healthcare; enrollments will not be taken at the meetings. Kerry Hardy on “Old Roads Revisited” October 27, 7:00 pm
As the final speaker in the Discover History Month series, Kerry Hardy will give an illustrated talk on “Old Roads Revisited” on Thursday, October 27, at 7:00 pm. Hardy explores, on foot and by books, maps, and online resources, the old native trails which became the settlers’ roads, and of course became our highways. Hardy will take a look at the earliest roads between Belfast and Thomaston, as well as a brief introduction to the various tools available to help sort them out — town histories, old military and topo maps, LIDAR, field work, and more. Come to our annual Pumpkin Palooza! We will be showing off all the jack-o-lanterns in a collective showing of glowing pumpkins. The Palooza will be after dark, at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 27.
