Ocean Garbage Dumping Practices September 15, 7:00 pm

The Midcoast Audubon Society offers a monthly program on environmental issues at the Camden Public Library. On Thursday, September 15, at 7:00 pm, Jack Boak will present a “History of Ocean Garbage Dumping Practices and Relevant Regulations” and how they affect various ecosystems. Boak is a retired Master Mariner who served 35 years on various US-flag merchant ships and is also a Nautical Science Specialist..

“James and the Giant Peach” September 16, 4:00 pm

It’s Roald Dahl’s 100th Birthday! In celebration we’ll be showing the movie “James and the Giant Peach” (1996, PG, 1 hr 19 min) on September 16 at 4:00.  Join us, we’ll have a special snack! Based on the Roald Dahl book. Dahl was a champion of the underdog and all things little -- in this case, an orphaned boy oppressed by two nasty, self-centered aunts. Click here for more information..

Cyber Sunday Session on “Etsy” September 18, 2:00 pm

Cyber Sundays is a series of weekly technology classes held at the Camden Public Library at 2:00 pm. All classes are free, but please call the library to sign up in advance at 236-3440. The sessions are led by the library’s Technology Coordinator, Olga Zimmerman. The topic for Sunday, September 18 is “Etsy.” Participants will learn all about this online marketplace of hand-made things, both how to shop and how to sell through your own “store.” Click here for more information..

Fortify Rights September 20, 7:00 pm

Fortify Rights is a not-for-profit NGO based in Bangkok, Thailand, that works to prevent and remedy human rights violations. The Executive Directors of the organization, Matthew Smith and Amy Smith, have worked on human rights issues for over 15 years, on the front line with local human rights defenders in Myanmar, Thailand, and Malaysia. They will give a presentation about Fortify Rights as part of the Camden Conference Community Events series on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:00 pm, at the Camden Public Library. George Mitchell Biographer September 22, 7:00 pm

Veteran Maine journalist and columnist Douglas Rooks will discuss his book and read from his biography, Statesman: George Mitchell and the Art of the Possible, at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 22. George Mitchell is one of Maine’s most notable citizens, and a public figure of national and international standing. The first full-length account of his life and career, Statesman traces Mitchell’s path from his humble beginnings in Waterville, one of five children of an Irish-American laborer and his wife, an immigrant to Waterville’s close-knit Lebanese community. Click here for more information..

Simply Books! Book Group September 24, 2:00 pm

Simply Books! is the library’s book group for adults. Simply Books! resumes on September 24, at 2:00 pm, after a summer break. All are welcome! There’s no set reading list, we don’t all read the same book, and it’s very informal. We simply bring along whatever book we’re currently reading and share it with the group. Film: “Absent God” September 27, 7:00 pm

The Camden Philosophical Society will continue its 2016 Film, Lecture, and Discussion Series with “Absent God: Emmanuel Levinas and the Humanism of the Other” (68 min) by Yoram Ron on Tuesday, September 27, at 7:00 pm. The philosopher Emmanuel Levinas merged the experience of the Holocaust with Talmudic wisdom and contemporary Western philosophy. This film presents Levinas’s notion of the “face to face” encounter. Book Sale Kicks Off Harbor Arts & Books Weekend September 30

The library's annual Fall Book Sale begins on Friday, September 30, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and continues on Saturday and Sunday. Come browse for pleasures and treasures!
