Summer Reading Programs Begins!
The library again offers Summer Reading Programs for both children and adults! The programs are very popular and encourage readers to stretch their usual categories and read some challenging, interesting, and popular books this summer. For adults, we will use the Bingo card format, with frames to be filled according to what book you are reading. Prizes will include (of course) a selection of new books, and more! The best part of the Summer Reading Program is the Reader's Response Bulletin Board, where you can write and read reports from others who are participating in the program. Stop by the check-out desk and pick up a Summer Reading Program bingo card!
And parents, don’t forget the summer reading program for kids! Sign up any time, the program begins July 7 and will meet on Thursdays for six weeks. July 7 is the “Kick-off” at 11:00 am for all age groups, featuring Chewonki's “World Famous Animals.".
Novel Jazz Septet Celebrates Jazz July 7, 7:00 pm
The Novel Jazz Septet returns to the Camden Amphitheatre on July 7 at 7:00 pm to feature the swinging music of the great American jazz composers, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn in a free concert. The band performs well-known compositions plus vintage gems recently unearthed from original scores at the Smithsonian and re-interpreted for you at the Camden Amphitheatre. These guys travel far and wide, keeping the spirit of Duke and Swee’Pea alive and swinging! Bring blankets or chairs for comfortable seating. The concert will be held rain or shine! Friday Tours Continue, 4:00 pm
The Camden Public Library and the Camden Area Business Group host free walking tours of downtown Camden every Friday at 4:00 pm through September 9. The tours begin on Atlantic Avenue at the Children’s Garden of the library and end at the Opera House. First Monday Movie “The Spiderwick Chronicles” July 11, 8:30 pm
July 11 is a “double feature” evening -- at 6:30 pm, the evening begins with a free concert by the MOJO Jazz orchestra, and at sundown, the movie screen comes out and the library will show the first movie in the Monday Movie series, “The Spiderwick Chronicles” (2008, 1 hr 36 min, PG) at 8:30 pm. The theme of the movie series this summer is “Books to Movies.” The Spiderwick Chronicles is a series of children’s books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. They chronicle the adventures of the Grace children, twins Simon and Jared and their older sister Mallory, after they move into the Spiderwick Estate and discover a world of fairies that they never knew existed. Why the Ocean Matters July 12, 7:00 pm
At a time when the world faces a multitude of potential calamities ranging from climate change to water pollution and plastic pollution to rapid population growth, the solution may well be in the sea around us. “It is water, the world’s most valuable element, that is the key ingredient to solving Earth’s most vexing problems,” says Peter Neill, director of the World Ocean Observatory and author of The Once and Future Ocean: Notes Toward a New Hydraulic Society. “It is urgent that we stop lamenting our current condition and start focusing on doing something about it,” he continues. Big July Book Sale Under the Tents for Four Days, July 14 to July 17
This summer the Camden Public Library’s huge July book sale under the tents will run for four days! Thousands of books in 29 categories will be on sale beginning on Thursday, July 14, and running through Sunday, July 17. The sale on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday is 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and continuing on Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Topics will range from biographies to young adult books and everything in between, including hardcover books, paperbacks, DVDs, and more. Featured will be books on business, cooking, essays, gardening, health, history, hobbies and crafts, humor and satire, nature, pets, quilting, marine subjects, Maine, performing arts, philosophy, poetry, religion, sci-fi and fantasy to science, sports, and travel. Peyton Place Retrospective July 14, 7:00 pm
The Camden Public Library is participating in the Peyton Place revival by offering a Peyton Place Retrospective on Thursday evening, July 14, at 7:00 pm. The newly refurbished full-length film will be shown in all its renewed glory at the Strand Theatre in Rockland on July 16. In anticipation of the “new” release, the Library will offer a selection of images and scenes from the movie as filmed Camden in 1957. Library staff will offer some remarks about the tremendous popularity and impact that the book first had. We are hoping that anyone familiar with the movie will join us with stories about the filming. We know there are several characters still in town who played extras in making the movie in 1957! Summer Harbor Arts & Books July 16 & 17
The Camden Public Library is now the producer of not only the Fall Harbor Arts & Books but the Summer fair as well. The Summer Harbor Arts and Books will be on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17. The newly-configured Summer Harbor Arts & Books is an admission-free, family-friendly event, offering items for every taste and prices for every pocketbook. Art patrons will find works in watercolor, oil, acrylics, and pastels, as well as photography, sculpture, and mixed media. Fans of handcrafted wares can shop for pottery, glass, woodcrafts, jewelry, and furniture. Fiber artists will also be in abundance with a wide selection of hand woven sweaters, gloves, scarves and much more. “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” July 18, 8:30 pm
The next movie in the free Monday Movies in the Park series is “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” (1988, 1 hr 44 min, PG), beginning at dusk (8:30 pm) in the Amphitheatre. All are welcome, bring blankets or chairs for comfortable seating. The movie is based on a curious murder mystery from 1981, “Who Censored Roger Rabbit?”, written by Gary K. Wolf. In the book, Eddie Valiant is a hard-boiled private eye, and Roger Rabbit is a second-banana cartoon character or “toon”. The movie creates a world in which both the humans and the “toons” are real. “Finding Our Way Through Creativity, Aging, and Illness” July 19, 7:00 pm
Dr. Wendy L. Miller has just published Sky Above Clouds: Finding Our Way Through Creativity, Aging, and Illness, and she will be bringing the book to the Camden Public Library on Tuesday, July 19, at 7:00 pm for a book presentation and signing. The book is both manual and memoir, showing a couple’s journey through aging and illness. Expressive arts therapist and writer Wendy Miller and her husband, Dr. Gene Cohen, a pioneering psychiatrist, researcher, and writer about creative aging, share a story from the intersection of medical science and life’s meaning – of love and family, life and death, and the healing power of creativity through illness and adversity. Midcoast Brass Quintet July 21, 7:00 pm
The Midcoast Brass Quintet will return to the Camden Amphitheatre for a concert of classical, jazz, and popular music on Thursday, July 21. The Midcoast Brass Quintet is an annual favorite in the Summer Music Series. The concert, scheduled from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, is part of the Camden Library’s popular summer series. The Midcoast Brass Quintet features Megan Kennedy on trombone, Doug Kennedy on tuba, Carolyn Kanicki on horn, and Peter Stuart and Bruce Cole on trumpets. Bring blankets or chairs for comfortable seating, the concert is free. The concert will include selections from well-known composers like Johann Sebastian Bach, Tchaikovsky, and Henry Filmore. The quintet will also debut numbers from famous artists Queen and The Beatles. With such a wide variety of styles, there is something for everyone to enjoy!.
2016 Midcoast Mini Maker Faire Call for Makers!
Camden’s Midcoast Mini Maker Faire is a hands-on festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness. We would love to hear about an activity you would like to share with the community. The 4th annual Midcoast Mini Maker Faire will be held Saturday, September 10, at the Camden Public Library from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Past Faires have attracted about 900 people each year, including local community members and visitors to the midcoast. Many of these visitors are families with elementary or middle-school aged children. This year we plan to host workshops to increase the adult participation as well as feature DIY projects targeted to adult makers. The Camden Shakespeare Festival announces its 2016 season with the magic of The Tempest, while two sets of identical twins create hilarious havoc in The Comedy of Errors.
