Adventures with Altadena's Exotic Plant-Exploring Popenoes

In a joint program of Altadena Heritage and the Library, on Saturday, July 7 at 10:00am,  local historian and author Michele Zack will tell an interesting, illustrated story of Altadena's horticultural past - that of the West India Garden. Frederick O. Popenoe established this nursery in 1906 to cultivate subtropical fruits and other plants in high demand from the thousands of newcomers pouring into Southern California. But the Popenoes were far more than nurserymen, they were avid plant explorers. Frederick sent his sons Paul and Wilson to Iraq, Lebanon, Mexico and Central America to find new fruits and other foods to introduce to the United States. Dates and avocadoes were just two of their most successful plant introductions.  Pictured: The Popenoes, including Paul pictured above in 1911, visited the Mideast to bring back dates. They also traveled to Mexico and Central America to bring back exotic new items for our plates such as the avocado.

Meet us at the Altadena Farmers Market on Wednesday, July 11 ; we are proud to host the Haiku Guys + Gals, who write personalized haiku poems on typewriters for individuals on the spot! Each interaction takes just a minute and culminates with the creation of a custom gift for visitors to our booth to take home or share. Some people have likened the experience to "a photo booth for the soul."
