Take the News Into Your Own Hands at Altadena Library's New Workshops

In this day and age where conflicting news stories abound and the world of journalism can be difficult to navigate, we at Altadena Library District want to empower our patrons of all ages with knowledge so that they can actively participate in the news-making process and more clearly understand all that goes into production of the "news" as we know it.

First, launching Tuesday, October 10, is the new four-part citizen journalism workshop series, #BeTheMedia. Led by Dean Lee of Mountain View News, these bi-monthly workshops will consist of a formal lecture and then a group discussion about topics participants bring in from the community, similar to any newsroom. Lecture topics will include:

  • Tuesday, October 10 - Identifying News: What makes information news-worthy? Learn how to use "news determinants" to understand information's importance in the community.
  • Tuesday, October 24 - Digging for Information: Peel back the "layers of truth" from press releases to investigative news.
  • Tuesday, November 7 - Interviewing: Learn the types of interviews, from in person to the use of email correspondence. This will also cover "on the record" and "off the record."
  • Tuesday, November 21 - Structure of a News Story: Break down how to use leads, including understanding the four different mediums of news, audio, video, and writing to tell stories.

Registration is required, and workshops have limited space. To sign up for a specific workshop or multiple workshops, call (626) 798-0833, ext. 117 or email

Next, in partnership with Crown City Network and experienced news professional Tami DeVine, Altadena Library invites local teens to participate in News Makers: Broadcast News Training, on  Saturday, October 21, at 10:00am to 4:00pm (lunch provided).  This program provides a terrific opportunity to teach young people how to produce TV news and gives them the skills they can use in any newsroom around the world if they decide to pursue Broadcast Journalism as a career. Teens will learn invaluable life skills including proper communication, self-confidence, interviewing and more. The on-camera and behind-the-scenes skills participants will learn include  TV News Reporting, TV News Writing & Producing, Videography, Video Editing, On-Camera Vocal Delivery, Professional Dress and Makeup for TV News, Proper Interview Technique, and MORE!

This teen program has limited spaces; all interested parties must register at

Featured Artist on Display: Preston Craig

Stop by the Main Library's Community Room and Reading Court throughout the month of October to experience the artistic stylings of Preston Craig.

"The nature of my work is that through the use of varied imagery, classical and digital painting techniques and humor, I utilize teddy bear images to address contemporary, social issues that are relevant and that affect the human race on a physical and spiritual level. Some paintings are a result of investigating my Native American roots (Choctaw), while others are a result of my spiritual quest and studies in Jungian symbology, Shamanic practices, and Aboriginal Dreamtime myth. Through my “Twisted Teddys” series and other imagery, I hope the viewer is inspired to be more aware of their global connections to each other and to take personal responsibility for the effecting positive change in society." - Preston Craig
