Adult Summer Reading Continues With a Focus on Talented Female Filmmakers

image

As we transition into August, Altadena Library is pleased to offer two educational opportunities about the history and present state of the fight for gender equality. The first event will take place on Saturday, July 29 at 3:30pm. Filmmaker Jennifer Hall Lee will present her documentary, Feminist: Stories from Women's Liberation, a one-hour film about the women's liberation movement covering the years 1963-1970. This film wsa released in 2013 and has been shown in film festivals, on college campuses, for non-profit organizations, in schools, and has been shown globally. It won "Best of the Fest" for documentary at the Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival. Music in the film is by the all female rock band from the 1960s, Fanny. A Q&A with filmmaker Jennifer Hall Lee will follow.

The Film Fest does not end there! Immediately following Jennifer Hall Lee's Q&A will be a screening of Inez Milholland - Forward Into Light, a short documentary that tells the story of Inez Milholland, an American icon in the gender equality and racial justice movements. You have likely heard her name, as she led significant marches down Fifth Avenue for New York Suffrage in 1912 and again down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House in 1913 with 8,000 women at her side. Filmmaker Martha Wheelock will stay for a Q&A after the screening.

The second related event is a special screening of the documentary Beauty Bites Beast on Saturday, August 5 at 3:30pmBeauty Bites Beast flips ideas about female helplessness, as women and other at-risk folks undertake the transformative experience of learning verbal, emotional and physical empowerment based self-defense. Filmmaker Ellen Snortland, a writer, producer, director, humorist, actor, dormant lawyer, women's and children's self-defense advocate, feminist-homemaker, and Altadena resident, will be present to answer questions immediately following the screening.

Featured Artist on Display: Keni Davis

Stop by the Main Library and see Keni's work in person in the Community Room!

Artist Keni Davis recently retired from the motion picture and television industry after spending 30 years painting sets and scenic art. You may have seen him around the 'Denas', painting at his small easel as curious onlookers watch and, eventually, engaging in conversation. Keni loves it when the inquisitive gather. That's because he can share his faith as he paints. Keni has honed his heart and talent in various sites from California to New York; as well as in Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Germany and West Africa.
