REMINDER: We will be closing early on Wednesday November 23rd at 5pm and will be closed on Thursday and Friday November 24 and 25. We will reopen on Saturday November 26 at 10am.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our community for their support of the Altadena Library and to let you know how thankful I am to be able to work and live in this exceptional community.

I am thankful that I am fortunate enough to have a vocation that gives me the opportunity to provide my community with free and equal access to information. I would like to quote my friend Michelle Jeske, the City Librarian for Denver, Colorado, who so beautifully stated the role and values of libraries:

"Public Libraries are drivers of civic health and engagement. That's why we provide tools and resources that positively affect individual lives and the community.... We believe in inclusivity and actively seek ways to bring people together. We know that we are stronger when we move forward with shared ideas and when all voices are given a chance to be heard and recognized.

Our guiding principles ground us in all that we do. These principles are foundational ingredients for a free and robust society and we have strengthened our resolve to carry out these principles daily. I'd like to share them with you as a reminder that we are deeply committed to your success, health and welfare.

I think these ideas can best be summed up by British novelist, poet and playwright Doris Lessing. “With a library you are free, not confined by temporary political climates. It is the most democratic of institutions because no one—but no one at all—can tell you what to read and when and how.”"

Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving,

Mindy Kittay, Altadena Library Director
