May Teen Advisory Board Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 4:14 p.m. Our first order of business was to discuss the annual Summer Reading Kick-off, an event which will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4. Volunteers need to arrive at 9:00 a.m. for a group photo. Please be sure to wear your green TAB shirts. If you do not have one, please see Deborah before the 4th. After this, we made plans for the TAB Graduation Party. In addition to celebrating the graduation of our four seniors ---Emma, Gavin, Jamie, and Jericho---we will be dining on barbequed hot dogs and hamburgers and playing fun games like volleyball, bean bag toss and Frisbee. A water-pistol roast of the graduates will be part of the fun. Feel free to bring a covered dish if you wish to this event!  Next, we talked about TAB’s new art corner, where we will be making projects such as catapults and art journals on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. After this, we discussed our future programming. During the summer, we will be hosting a Teen Chocolate Olympics and a Savvy Self-Defense program on June 17th and July 15th, respectively. In addition to these events, we will be showing movies every Monday night at 5:00 p.m. in the Puppet Theater. Our first featured film of the summer is Pitch Perfect 2 on Monday, June 6th. The following events will be held in the fall: a bowling party in September; our annual TAB Halloween Party in October (this year’s theme will be famous book villains); and a murder mystery in November. Finally, we voted for our Book Club title. This month’s winner was The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The meeting ended at 4:45 p.m. Have a great summer, everyone! ):

Summer Reading Recommendations

Summer has arrived and the Teen Advisory Board at QPL has some great book titles to recommend! Whether you’re lying around on the beach or lazing in the back yard hammock, QPL has some great books to keep your mind occupied. Fresh off the press is Dead Investigation by Charlie Price. Murray Kiefer – friend to the dead- (he can hear dead people talking), has got himself tangled up in yet another murder mystery. There’s been a brutal killing and Murray can’t pretend he isn’t hearing strange things beyond the edge of the grave that may help police unravel the crime. Read on to find out how he does it! And then, of course, if you are looking for a good romance, check out Dream On by Kerstin Gier.  Things seem to be going well for Liv Silver: she’s adjusting to her new home in London; she has a growing romance with Henry Harper, one of the cutest boys in school; and the girl who’s been turning her dreams into nightmares, Anabel, is locked up. But serenity doesn’t last long. At night Liv senses a dark presence following her through the dream world. Does someone have a score to settle? And finally, if you are a fan of the West Wing and other such stories, be sure to pick of the book, Zero Day by Jan Gangsei. Eight years ago Addie Walker was the victim of the most notorious kidnapping of the decade. Her father is now President of the United States. And now the unthinkable happens; Addie resurfaces just as her father is fighting to keep the Oval Office.  But who is this sixteen-year-old girl with a quiet burning intelligence now living is the White House? There are those in the administration who find her timely return suspicious. The question is…do you? Read on to find out the answer. And yes, all these books and many more are available for check-out at the Quincy Public Library. Happy Summer Reading!

Starkid
Review     by Alexis Bergman

This review is going to be a little different from my average reviews. For anyone unfamiliar, Team Starkid is a YouTube group who has put on many amazing musicals. They perform them in Chicago to a wide range of audiences. These will be entertaining to anyone who’s a fan of anything a little geeky. A Very Potter Musical, A Very Potter Sequel, A Very Potter Senior Year, Holy Musical B@man, Starship, ANI, Trail to Oregon, and Twisted are absolutely fun filled and are jam packed with references that any geek is sure to get. They've got kicking music that will be stuck in your head for weeks (you’ll thank me later) and their humor will keep you laughing. One thing that I really have to say is that the talent is so obvious; there's no way to doubt their ingenuity. All of their music is their own original creations, many of them play multiple characters per musical, and the roles are very demanding interesting roles. Their sets and props aren't very realistic but they had right budgets and it just points out the how entertaining they really are that the poor sets don't matter. It collectively creates an awesome array of great music, creativity, and all out laughs. Check these out and enjoy! :
