Teens Have Janet Good to Thank
Janet Good has a Masters in Library Science degree. She was the young adult librarian for the second, biggest suburban library in the country – Cuyahoga County Public Library – before joining Summit County Library. “I had been volunteering at the elementary school library in my neighborhood,” she explained. Her service transitioned from schools to public libraries because the district wanted her to return to school to get her teaching certificate. Instead, she chose to work with the teens at Cuyahoga Library for 24 hours a week.
Lucky for us! Good still works with teens in Summit and started many programs and events for Summit County teens reminiscent of her time working with the Girl Scouts. “In 1996 I started subbing in all three Summit locations,” she said. “I came from a library that hired teenagers to shelve the books. When I started in Summit the libraries had librarians and library aides doing that,” added Good. That was one of the first changes she suggested occur, “I thought volunteers could take over doing the shelving with two volunteers a day and one on Saturday providing this service,” said Good. “Our volunteers are from age 40 to 83 years old. Most of them have backgrounds in library work or teaching and each person catches on very quickly to the things we need to accomplish in the library,” she added.
See what teen programs are coming up this summer.
