Volunteering Plays an Important Role in Janet Good's Life

Few people can enter North Branch Library without a hello followed by their first name from Janet Good. She has tried to learn the names of everyone who frequents the library over her 21 years of service to Summit County Library.  At the end of this month Janet is retiring from the library and we are honoring her in a four-part series of articles. This is the first.

Janet loves to volunteer! She is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America and that organization brought her to Colorado in 1977. “I brought Senior Scouts to the Y Camp of the Rockies and when we got to Denver and in the rental cars, the temperature outside was 75 degrees with 50% humidity,” she said. “I had come from 88 degrees and 88% humidity,” she added. Good spent the next nine years convincing her husband to move to Colorado and in 1986 they did just that.

She spent her first year volunteering with the Girl Scouts, 4H and at the Breckenridge Film Festival. “It was a great way to meet wonderful people,” Good shared describing why volunteering was important to her. “I’m committed to volunteering especially for a non-profit or a lowly-funded organization. I like the people. I have the expertise and I like the work,” she added.

The Friends of the Library was the next organization that got her attention on a volunteer basis. Her neighbor, Susan Donaldson, was the secretary of the Friends in 1987. She took Good to her first meeting and by the second meeting Janet was the new treasurer. “I’m still a member of the Friends of the Library and continue to help fundraise and assist the treasurer after 30 years,” she shared.
