Iran: An Ancient and Modern Look Presented by Bob Hinderholtz
Tonight the Friends of the Library Travel Slide Show Series presents Iran: An Ancient and Modern Look with Bob Hinderholtz showcasing his photographs and stories of his travels to this Middle Eastern country. The presentation begins at 7 pm in the Blue River Room of the North Branch Library. Admission is free.
“This presentation will provide a look at ancient ruins and culture along with the archeological sites of Persepolis, and Zoroastrian cities,” said Hinderholtz. “We also will share spectacular gardens and Mosques, learn of their poetry, and I’ll share my visit in a local home where I saw the big difference in public and private life,” he added.
In September of 2016 Hinderholtz took this Road Scholar trip and shared it was the program’s first sponsored trip to Iran. “I have wanted to go there for some time and this was my first opportunity,” he said. “We saw both ancient ruins and modern life. It was all that I hoped for and more,” Hinderholtz added. “The biggest surprise was how welcoming and friendly the people were especially to Americans. They often would stop and ask to take their picture with you, and a couple of times a person was asked to hold their baby while the parents took a picture. Americans are a novelty to them and they love to talk to you. The other surprise was all of their strict rules are regularly ignored in private,” said Hinderholtz.
In addition to the archeological sites Hinderholtz also visited Qom, “It’s one of the most conservative cities you can find along with Tehran and Shiraz,” he said.
Join us this evening to see his photographs and to hear his stories about visiting the country. Our remaining 2017 presentations include:
