Library News & Notes | | June 2018 |
Dear Readers, Does it seem to you that every year just goes by faster and faster? Favorite annual library events certainly came upon me sooner than usual this time, and for some reason bunched together during one month. That made me think that I should share with you all what we’ve been up to, so you can plan to join us next year for one or all. And 2019 will be upon us in a snap. You know about the Big Read, in which we partner with the Massillon Museum in programming to tie in with a book the whole community reads. Along with dragon-puppet-making, teen Cake Wars and more, the Big Read culminated for us with a field trip visit from 150 WHS students for book discussions. Earlier that week we had to divide and conquer, as I attended the Dixieland Jazz program we sponsor monthly at the Massillon Senior Center, while board member Margy Vogt and our Children’s/PR Manager Laura Klein led the hugely popular Poetry Night. Poet Duane Dodson treated them to a special poem he wrote about our library! The Big Read Keynote speaker took place on the same night as the Ohio Library Council Trustee Dinner, so I called on Adult Services Manager Jessica Watkins to be one place so I could be at the other. One of the winners of the poetry contest read her poem at the Big Read One-Act-Plays at WHS, which I attended, followed the next evening with our PRISM ceremony. The PRISM award is given by the Library Board to students in Massillon and Fairless districts who exemplify characteristics like persistence and courage. Students are nominated by their teachers, and win books placed in their school libraries, the public library, and a copy for their own. It’s the one night of the library year I’m sure to carry a tissue, because it’s SO uplifting. And speaking of uplift, the following week we honored the library’s 105 volunteers with an annual dinner. Far from a stodgy affair, this year found attendees playing children’s card games rather than listen to a speaker. (I never thought I’d be dealing out Go Fish cards to our board members!) After all that activity, I’m doing what Jimmy Buffett suggests in a favorite song of mine: “Breathe in, breathe out, move on.” In this case, moving on equals setting up a new process for evaluating the outcome of library programming utilizing an online tracking tool from the Public Library Association. We want to know not just what people attend, but how it changes their lives. And I’m putting together final touches for a one-day management retreat so we can build an even tighter team of leaders, since two of our managers have just retired and we have new “family.” (We’re going all the way to the library in Wooster, so don’t picture us all on the beach somewhere!) I like to take a few lines to answer a patron suggestion or two. For the person who said we need better quality library bags—I’ll look into options for the next order; thanks for pointing it out. You probably have noticed that the audiobooks have finally moved to a better location in the reading room, and new movie posters have been ordered for the AV Room. A suggestion about putting out a big jar for donations comes up periodically, but we’re not comfortable with cash that doesn’t go through the register. We have a lot of responsibility as stewards of public funds, and we don’t want your money to be a snatch-and-grab victim. Instead, please just hand any gift right to a staff member, and they can key it into the register as a donation. I love your generous hearts! I’m in a nonfiction reading mode right now. It might sounds strange, but Barbara Ehrenreich’s Natural Causesis funny, caustic, and life-affirming, even as is examines the way we obsess over our bodies and try to hold off the inevitable. She reminds us that since the problem is ultimately unsolvable, perhaps we should enjoy every day we have remaining. I hope that includes reading a good book! Director, Massillon Public Library
