Library Friends,

Do you want to know a sure-fire way to breathe fresh enthusiasm into an organization? Just bring in some new staff members who are engaged and energetic who can provide a new perspective on your procedures and services. How do I know? That’s exactly what’s happened at the library in recent weeks. Along with some fresh faces at the circulation desks, you’ll find hidden behind the scenes our new Technology Manager Jeff Kreger, and our new Outreach Services Manager Mark Villono. Actually, you’ll see Mark if you use the bookmobile or other mobile services. He’s training with our beloved Anne Juhasz who retires from the post on May 4th. And just this week we welcomed our new Genealogy Specialist David Distelhorst who has moved to Massillon from Columbus to reinvigorate our local history and genealogy services.

More than once lately I’ve found myself saying, “I’ve never thought about it that way before.” THAT is the benefit of infusing new perspectives. Welcome, gentlemen.

Now, for our valued and supportive Navarre community, I have very exciting news. For the first time in MY memory, we are going to offer some weekend hours at your branch. Beginning May 5th, the Barry Askren Memorial Branch next to the Towpath YMCA will be open on Saturdays from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Coming soon will be additional programming. Stop by and see the friendly Askren staff, now six days a week!

Since I’m on a roll with big news, I’ll mention that Sunday hours are returning to the Main branch in the fall. I’ll tell you more about the start date soon, but the hours will be 1:00 – 5:00 pm during the school year, as they were before the economic downturn in 2009 required us to cut hours. We know from strategic planning focus groups that you want us open a bit on Sundays, and we listened. We’re working now on the scheduling. Here is the most exciting news for me personally…I’m putting myself on the Sunday rotation to work the reference desk. Yes, I do miss that “thrill of the chase” working on a research question, and that one-on-one interaction with patrons. Not that there’s anything wrong with being the director, but it doesn’t compare with finding someone an answer to their question. Well, I guess they BOTH require problem-solving!

Since I don’t really have any problems to report, I’ll jump to the popular “Sherie answers questions from the suggestion box” feature.

Q—Put in a café, like a Starbucks!
A—We have learned from other libraries that this is not cost-effective, and we don’t have physical space to give up. When I became director in 2011 we tried vending machines as a compromise, and it wasn’t long before the vendor removed them because they didn’t generate enough revenue to be worth their while. But it’s OK if YOU want to swing through the coffee shop before visiting us. Just make sure the drink has a tight lid.

Q—Play ambient music, like you hear in stores.
A—Nope, not going to happen. More people would be annoyed than would enjoy it. However, if you’re someone who always wants to be surrounded by music, you should check out our subscription to hoopla. With your library card you can “borrow” albums, everything from the latest releases to easy listening. Ask the staff in the Computer Center if you need a tutorial. If you come to the library with your device but no earbuds, they can even sell you a set for $1.

Book recommendations: A debut novel by Heather Lloyd, My Name is Venus Black about a teenage girl and her little autistic brother whose lives are thrown a real curve after Venus shoots her stepfather. Trust me on this, you will NOT blame her after learning the reason, and root for her as she searches for family. I seriously could not put this down last weekend even though I was supposed to be reading other things! And for nonfiction, allow me to plug the acclaimed Killers of the Flower Moon: the Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann. If you’re like me, you aren’t aware that in the Roaring 20s, the richest people per capita in the WORLD were the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma…until they all started to be murdered. Enter a young J. Edgar Hoover and a former Texas Ranger to solve the conspiracy. Enjoy!

PAWS To Read

Boys and girls are invited to read to the gentle and well-behaved therapy dogs that participate in the program. Meditation

Led by guest presenter Gwen Miller. As a prelude to each session, the group will discuss two chapters from the book Empowering Your Soul Through Meditation. Tour of the Rodney G. Klein Museum and Library

This is your chance to see “what’s in the old post office!” This one-of-a-kind museum of the stock market and financial world features artifacts from Massillonian Rodney G. Klein’s lifetime of collecting. You will see ticker-tape machines and anything remotely related to Wall Street trading, but also an extensive art collection and thousands of books relating to economics, finance and politics. Genealogy Society member and Klein Museum board member David Rankl will give a personal tour and focus on research he compiled on Mr. Klein’s life and family. A short business meeting and introduction of the library’s new genealogist David Distelhorst will be part of the event. No reservations are required. The Little Steel Strike
Saturday, May 5

Join USW’s SOAR (Steelworkers’ Organization of Active Retirees) in a commemoration of the deaths of local workers in the 1937 “Little Steel Strike” involving 13,000 employees in Canton and Massillon. Recent research tells us more about the three local men killed during a peaceful assembly, who will be honored with a plaque on Duncan Plaza. this program will be presented by Professor Ahmed White, author of The Last Great Strike, poet Sue Burton, and special guest Leo Gerard of the United Steelworkers (USW).
