Happy New Year, library family!
We are already excited about things that are happening at the library in 2018 as part of the implementation of the new strategic plan that YOU helped develop.
One major component of the plan in coming years is to help support students of all ages with homework help. To that end, we are jumping right in with a very visible change in our Main building. Some staff offices have moved and cubicles have been taken away on the second floor so that we can install something we’ve needed for years—several small glassed-in meeting areas for 2-3 people. Not a week goes by that we don’t turn away inquiries for similar spaces by tutors working with their students, or job coaches and clients, or even attorneys or governments officials. We’ve never figured out how to fit that kind of space within the confines of our building, but we got creative. And thanks to generous gifts by the Gessner Family Foundation and a private donor, the wall system and furniture are due mid-January. Stay tuned for policies on how to reserve the spaces, but at this point I think we’ll arrange it through the computer center staff who are in close proximity to the rooms.
And speaking of tutoring, I am thrilled to announce the start of a new service for K-12 students with Massillon Public Library cards. Thanks again to a generous donation from the Herncane Family in memory of family friend and librarian Edward D’Alessandro, we will offer FREE online tutoring from 3pm -10pm with credentialed teachers in 25 subject areas through a subscription to Tutor.com, part of the Princeton Review company. Students, and adults studying for college entrance tests, can set up a “locker” to save work and transcripts, upload their research papers or essays for teacher review and comment, share a whiteboard or graph paper for math problems, and get assistance through live Chat. We want EVERY student in Massillon and Fairless to know about and use this service, so we will be talking it up to the curriculum folks, teachers and students. Our staff can’t help you much yet since our own training on the service doesn’t begin until late January, but you don’t need to wait; Tutor.com is live NOW, with a link already on the library’s homepage at www.massillonlibrary.org. Please check it out and spread the word!
What am I reading? To prepare for a speaking engagement, I went down a rabbit hole of obsession with the life of Charles Dickens, who let me just say, had some serious problems with women! I started with the fiction Mr. Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva, and then because it had some preposterous plot elements, had to read some biographies where I found out that his real life was just as strange! One of the best novels I’ve read in recent weeks was given to me by a fellow VOCI singer, and I wasn’t immediately attracted to the story line of Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue. I mean, I’ve never wondered about life as an African chauffeur, his executive boss, and their families on the cusp of the Lehman Brothers’ collapse. But oh, the writing, and the timeliness of opening our eyes to the immigrant experience in our country—I highly recommend this 2016 debut. What I’m REALLY excited about is in my book bag right now, my beloved Alice Hoffman’s The Rules of Magic, the new prequel to her hit Practical Magic.
Back to the New Year. I love this quote by author Neil Gaiman, who is one of the strongest voices we know (and adore) in support of libraries. This philosophy is yet more proof of his wisdom:
"I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something."

Journaling Series - Session One
Wednesday, January 3 --- 10:30 a.m.
In the first class guest presenter Gloria Miller will introduce several different ways to journal and allow participants to explore which styles may be right for them. Examples and suggestions will be provided to make it easy to get started on a path of self-discovery. The second class session will be held on Wednesday, January 31, at 10:30 a.m. These free workshops are open to people at every level of journaling experience. Massillon Genealogical Society Meeting: School Days

Computer Class: Your Library at Home

Participants will learn how to search for and download electronic books from the Ohio Digital Library and also how to search, reserve, and renew paper books, DVDs, and CDs from the library's online catalog. Participants will also learn how to create an account in hoopla to borrow digital movies and music with a library card. The Overdrive and Libby mobile apps will also be demonstrated. Bring your tablets and mobile devices for the question and answer session. Experience using a computer and accessing the Internet is needed. Seating is limited and registration is required. PAWS To Read
Calling all girls and boys! You are invited to attend the first session of PAWS To Read 2018 on Tuesday, January 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the library's auditorium. Come meet the friendly dogs and owners who participate in the once-per-month program.
You pick a book and a dog; then you practice your reading skills by sharing the story with the very patient, and non-judgmental, furry listener. Stay for as little or as long as you like. Tracy Gregg hails from Williamsport, Pennsylvania. She moved to Akron, Ohio, with her family in 1985. She has been married for 19 years to Glenn who has shown amazing support and love in all aspects of her life. She has two grown sons; Charles and Michael and four grandchildren who are the light of her life. She formerly owned and operated Moffit Heights Preschool and Daycare Center. It was there that her passion for photography blossomed. She currently owns and operates Making Memories Photography by Tracy & Custom Framing in our fair city of Massillon where she is instrumental in capturing the most special events in people’s lives. Keith Carretta and Tim Sidel have been a source of inspiration in fostering her growth and success throughout her career.
In true fashion for her quest to give back to the community she donates her services to capture milestones in the lives of children who long to find their “Forever” homes. She is also dedicated to capturing the history as well as current events within the great city of Massillon. She looks forward to traveling down many paths in life and sharing those experiences from behind her camera lens.
